Over the past few years, Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) has experienced an increase in the volume of business survey data supplied by e-mail. However, up until now, SNZ has not had the business processes available to support electronic collection in a way that meets both the needs of SNZ and data suppliers. To this end, SNZ has invested a lot of effort over the last year in investigating how best to approach the problems and opportunities presented by electronic data collection. This paper outlines SNZ's plans to move the e-mail supplied data to a secure lodgement facility and the future development of an internet-based data collection system. It also presents a case study of the Monthly Retail Trade Survey data currently supplied by e-mail. This case study illustrates some of the benefits of electronic data, but also examines some of the costs to the organization and the data quality problems encountered. It also highlights the need to consider the data collection methodology within the wider context of the total survey cycle.

The demand for information on the electronic economy requires statistical agencies to assess the relevancy and improve the quality of their existing measurement programs. Innovations at the U.S. Census Bureau have helped the Bureau meet the user's urgent needs for this information, and improve the quality of the data. Through research conducted at the U.S. Census Bureau, as well as tapping into the expertise of academia, the private sector, and other government agencies, the new data on electronic commerce and electronic business processes has been strengthened. Using both existing and new data, the U.S. Census Bureau has discovered that research provides new key estimates of the size, scope, and impact of the new economy.

An extensive survey on preparedness for the Year 2000 computer bug was conducted by Statistics Canada in February and March of 1999. Senior managers in some 10,100 public and private organizations from across Canada were contacted. They were asked about the various steps that their organizations might have taken to address the Year 2000 issue, including: assessment, conversion and testing of systems for Year 2000 compliance; communications with business partners (customers, suppliers and service providers), and Year 2000-related contingency planning. Questions on the timelines that had been established for completing these preparations were also included.
In general, most businesses and organizations said they had taken at least some steps to prepare their systems. Respondents also reported they were confident that their organizations would be ready in time for the Year 2000, and most organizations expected to be ready before the end of September of 1999. Preparations, however, generally remained a work in progress, and some organizations were not planning to finish until the last quarter of the year. This report includes detailed tabulations of the survey results, with breakdowns for 16 industrial sectors and five geographic regions.
