    Description:

    Imputation is a common technique employed by survey-taking organizations in order to address the problem of item nonresponse. While in most of the cases the resulting completed data sets provide good estimates of means and totals, the corresponding variances are often grossly underestimated. A number of methods to remedy this problem exists, but most of them depend on the sampling design and the imputation method. Recently, Rao (1992), and Rao and Shao (1992) have proposed a unified jackknife approach to variance estimation of imputed data sets. The present paper explores this technique empirically, using a real population of businesses, under a simple random sampling design and a uniform nonresponse mechanism. Extensions to stratified multistage sample designs are considered, and the performance of the proposed variance estimator under non-uniform response mechanisms is briefly investigated.

Five alternative composite estimators of the rent index are presented and justified, both from an intuitive as well as theoretical point of view. An empirical study testing and comparing the proposed methods is described and summarized. Recommendations are put forth.

    The peach, sour cherry and the grape objective yield surveys have been carried out annually in the Niagara Peninsula since 1964 in order to forecast the magnitude of change in marketable fruit production from the previous year. Timeliness of the estimates is essential in order to enable the Ontario Tender Fruit Growers Marketing Board (OTFGMB) and the Ontario Grape Growers Marketing Board (OGGMB) to establish the marketing strategies well ahead of the harvest. This paper summarizes the major changes due to the second redesign initiated in 1982. In particular, the sample design, data collection operation and modifications of the estimation procedures are elaborated upon.
