    The care economy, which includes paid and unpaid care for children, seniors, and people with disabilities, is a fundamental component of societies. In Canada, and around the world, demographic and socioeconomic transformations, notably the aging population, are increasing the demand for care workers. This study uses data from the 2016 Census of Population and from the Labour Force Survey to examine the personal and job characteristics of workers in paid care occupations by gender. It also examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the employment of workers in this sector, compared to workers in all other occupations.

    This study is based on data from the Census of Population and the Longitudinal Immigration Database to provide a profile of immigrants in nursing and health care support occupations. It also examines the representation of immigrants in nursing and health care support occupations by intended occupation upon admission to Canada and by admission category. Lastly, it examines the professional integration of immigrants who completed their nursing education both in and outside Canada.

Data are taken from the Census of Population (2001, 2006 and 2016), National Household Survey (2011) and in some cases the Education and Labour Market Longitudinal Platform (ELMLP).

How are the results ordered?

The Sort by feature provides three options:

  • By date – sorts results by product release date starting with the most recent.
  • By relevance is only needed or beneficial when you use the search box and submit a search query. Results are ordered by a combination of where the search term appears in the content, e.g., if it appears in the title, it likely means the product is more relevant to your search; how up to date or new the content in the product is; how popular the product is; and other factors.
  • By title – sorts results alphabetically.
