Description: This public use microdata file (PUMF) provides researchers access to data on the distribution of SARS-CoV-2 lineages detected in the Canadian provinces between May and September 2022. Samples were collected as part of the Canadian COVID-19 Antibody and Health Survey (CCAHS), Cycle 2. The PUMF file consists of a subset of participants of the CCAHS who submitted a positive PCR saliva sample over the course of the collection of the survey. The PUMF contains select demographic information including sex at birth, age group, province and the week of collection. The file also contains SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequences and its associated data.

This study presents the prevalence of overweight, obesity, sleep duration and measures of sleep quality in the Canadian Armed Forces. Description: To date, population estimates of hypertension prevalence among children and adolescents in Canada have been based on clinical guidelines in the National High Blood Pressure Education Program’s 2004 Fourth Report on the Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents (NHBPEP 2004). In 2017, the American Academy of Pediatrics published updated guidelines in Clinical Practice Guideline for Screening and Management of High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents (AAP 2017), followed by Hypertension Canada in 2020 with its publication of Comprehensive Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis, Risk Assessment, and Treatment of Hypertension in Adults and Children (HC 2020). This is the first study in Canada to compare the national estimates of the prevalence of child and adolescent hypertension based on AAP 2017 with estimates of prevalence based on NHBPEP 2004 and HC 2020. The main objectives of this analysis were to apply AAP 2017 and HC 2020 to all six cycles of Canadian Health Measures Survey data available to date and examine the effect on population estimates of hypertension prevalence by sex and age group among children and adolescents aged 6 to 17. This study also examines the impact of applying AAP 2017 across time and selected characteristics, describes those who are reclassified into a higher BP category under AAP 2017, and examines differences in hypertension prevalence resulting from applying HC 2020 versus AAP 2017.

Description: Immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases such as shingles and pneumococcal disease play an important role in the overall health and well being of older Canadians. However, vaccine uptake remains low. Using data from The Canadian Health Survey on Seniors – 2019/2020, this study examined the prevalence and factors associated with shingles and pneumococcal vaccination among individuals aged 65 and older living in the community.

Description: The validity of survival estimates from cancer registry data depends, in part, on the identification of the deaths of deceased cancer patients. People whose deaths are missed seemingly live on forever and are informally referred to as “immortals”, and their presence in registry data can result in inflated survival estimates. This study assesses the issue of immortals in the Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) using a recently proposed method that compares the survival of long-term survivors of cancers for which “statistical” cure has been reported with that of similar people from the general population.

It includes key statistics on population health such as health outcomes (e.g., chronic conditions), health behaviours (e.g., smoking and alcohol consumption) and access to health care.

The lifetime probabilities of developing cancer and dying from cancer are useful summary statistics that describe the impact of cancer within a population. However, there is little information on how lifetime probabilities of developing cancer and dying from cancer have changed over time. This study aims to present detailed lifetime probabilities of developing cancer and dying from cancer by sex and cancer type, and to describe changes in these lifetime probabilities over time among the Canadian population.

Description: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a major public health concern impacting the lives of many Canadians. Among all TBIs, concussions are the most common. However, to date, the incidence of concussions among the Canadian population has remained unknown. To address this data surveillance gap, this study presents national estimates on the percentage of Canadians aged 12 years or older (excluding those living in the territories) who sustained one or more concussions in 2019.
