- Geographic files and documentation: 16-510-X2024003Description: This product contains gridded datasets of annual estimates of average normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and green/grey classification. "Urban greenness" is a measure that assesses the condition and health of an urban landscape. Vegetation contributes to more livable, beautiful communities by helping to clean the air, moderate the local climate, control water flow and provide habitats for wildlife. Annual average normalized difference vegetation index datasets and annual green/grey classifications are available for the years 2000 to 2025 and cover Canada south of 60°N.Release date: 2025-11-17

- Table: 16-510-X2025002Description: This product contains a raster dataset that maps Canada’s terrestrial and freshwater extent using an 11-class classification system. It represents land cover circa 2020 and has a 30-metre spatial resolution. The main purpose of the land cover register is to identify land cover and land use assets to support ecosystem accounting. It was created through the integration of multiple land cover and land use datasets.Release date: 2025-03-27

It focuses on the change in built-up area, arable land and natural and semi-natural land in and around CMAs from 1971 to 2011. The report includes CMA-specific geographical profiles that include tables, charts and maps as well as links to a wealth of other relevant information.
The June 2016 update includes the addition of spatial data files (ArcGIS®, file extension: .shp) for each CMA that can be downloaded from the HTML version of the publication.
Release date: 2016-03-22 - 32. Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada ArchivedArticles and reports: 16-201-X201300011875Description:
The article "Measuring ecosystem goods and services in Canada" presents preliminary results achieved through a two-year interdepartmental project to develop experimental ecosystem accounts and the required statistical infrastructure. It provides an overview of ecosystem accounting and valuation and presents several measures of the quantity and quality of ecosystems and ecosystem goods and services (EGS). These measures focus on land cover, human landscape modification, ecosystem potential of the boreal forest, biomass extraction, marine and coastal EGS, and wetland EGS. The report also includes a case study on the Thousand Islands National Park exploring monetary valuation of EGS and concludes with a research agenda for future work on this topic.

The CSA boundaries are derived from land cover data and represent the geographic extent of settled areas based on their physical footprint on the landscape. The boundaries can be used for reference, mapping and spatial analysis of settled areas and urban ecosystems. The CSA boundaries are created and maintained under the umbrella of the Census of Environment, and will support Statistics Canada's ecosystem accounting efforts.Release date: 2023-10-27
