Description: There is a growing trend in the prevalence of activity limitations among both certified journeypersons and non-journeypersons between 2016 and 2021, with certified journeypersons experiencing this increase at a faster rate. In the context of the skilled trades, activity limitations can pose as a barrier for prospective journeypersons, and the possibility of worsening their condition can also pose as a motivating factor for them to leave an apprenticeship program and/or quit the skilled trades altogether. These points are of particular interest given the various reports on the incoming labour shortages in the skilled trades and the need to attract and retain journeypersons in the field to meet future demands.

Description: Renters’ shelter costs can vary substantially by duration of tenancy. Renters who recently moved into their dwelling can pay substantially more than longstanding renters. This tenure-based discrepancy in rents paid can have important implications in terms of affordability and residential mobility. This study sheds light on trends in shelter cost differences by duration of tenancy from 1996 to 2021, and how this gap in rental costs between recent renters and longer-term renters varies across municipalities and neighbourhoods.

    Geography: Canada
    Description:

This paper summarizes the major trends in the series on the spatial analysis of crime conducted by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS) using geographic information system technology in Canadian cities. The main purpose of this analytical series was to explore the relationships between the distribution of crime and the demographic, socio economic and functional characteristics of neighbourhoods. Questions addressed include: How are police reported criminal incidents distributed across city neighbourhoods? Is the crime rate in a neighbourhood associated with factors that are specific to that neighbourhood, such as its demographic, socio-economic, housing and land use characteristics? Is the crime rate in a neighbourhood influenced by nearby neighbourhoods? These questions were explored using data from the 2001 Census of Population, the Incident-Based Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (UCR2), and land use data provided by the various cities.

  • Articles and reports: 85-561-M2008013
    Geography: Canada
    Description:

The purpose of this research paper was to examine whether the chances of experiencing fear of crime varied across Canadian urban neighbourhoods, and whether factors associated with individuals and their neighbourhoods explained this variation. In addition, the study aimed to understand how Canadians' perceptions of neighbourhood crime and disorder influenced their chances of experiencing fear. Analyses were based on data from the 2004 General Social Survey (GSS) on Victimization and the 2001 Census. Multilevel regression modelling techniques were employed in order to address the statistical complications that arise when individuals are clustered within larger units such as neighbourhoods. The results showed that while the characteristics and perceptions of individuals were most important in explaining differences in fear among urban Canadians; a statistically significant portion of the variation in fear was attributable to the neighbourhood environment.

    Description:

The 2006 Census hit the streets during the hottest labour market in a generation, with many regional unemployment rates at long-term lows and wage increases outstripping price hikes. While technological advances reduced manpower needs, tens of thousands of temporary workers were still required which proved to be a problem in many areas. Census managers extended the collection period and moved an unprecedented number of enumerators across regions to attain acceptable data quality while remaining within budget.

    Description:

The term ecumene comes from the Greek word oikoumene , which means inhabited land or inhabited world. Geographers generally use the term to refer to land where people have made their permanent home, and to all work areas that are considered occupied and used for agricultural or any other economic purpose.

This working paper first examines the ecumene concept from a geographic viewpoint and highlights some of the geographic literature. It also examines the cartographic issues, such as the limitations of the choropleth map, and then provides an overview of Statistics Canada's use of the ecumene in its thematic mapping program. Finally, the paper provides details on the development of the population ecumene for the 2006 Census.

Description: The results of this research show that exposure to global restructuring trends increases community vulnerability to population and employment decline. Similarly, other condititions of community distress, such as high unemployment rates and low participation rates, increase the vulnerability to decline. Community assets, such as human capital, economic diversification, and proximity to agglomerations, reduce vulnerability to population and employment decline.

  • Notices and consultations: 92-130-X
    Description:

This report describes the comments received as a result of the 2006 Census questionnaire consultation process. In preparation for the next census, Statistics Canada has continued its tradition of consulting data users and other interested persons for their views on the content of the 2006 Census questionnaire. Based on feedback received during previous consultations, Statistics Canada decided to implement a new integrated consultation approach. With a broader spectrum than just the 2006 Census content, this new model also encouraged discussions on the 2001 Census data dissemination process and different geographic concepts.

This round of consultation was held in two phases. The first phase invited data users to submit their written suggestions. The second phase included meetings with data users to discuss, in greater detail, comments brought forth during the first phase. It allowed for a thorough analysis on data users' specific needs prior to meetings and was instrumental in identifying Statistics Canada's participation. According to the feedback received, data users appreciated this new consultation process.

Consultations on the content of the 2006 Census were held from June to December 2002. Over 75 written submissions were received and more than 25 meetings were organized throughout Canada, totalling approximately 800 comments.

  • Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 92-383-X
    Description:

This report discusses various aspects of the quality of data on mother tongue, language spoken at home, knowledge of language and language at work. In the 2001 Census questionnaire, there are five questions on these four language categories. These questions, complemented by questions on ethnicity, religious affiliation and immigration, provide an opportunity to study linguistic and cultural characteristics of Canadians. These questions on languages are designed to collect the demolinguistic data. Demolinguistics, a subdiscipline of demography (not of linguistics), involves the demographic analysis of data on languages. Such analysis is useful for our understanding of, for instance, the linguistic diversity of Canadians, the evolution of language groups, or the transmission of mother tongue between generations. For each of the four categories of language questions mentioned above, the report describes briefly the procedures of data collection, some aspects of coverage, the processing stages of the data verification operation and the procedures used for editing and imputing the language variables. Finally, a description on how the data were evaluated will be presented.
