Data collected through Statistics Canada's life sciences statistics program indicate that Canada has a sizable biotechnology sector in comparison with larger countries in Europe. This program regularly provides assistance to other countries, which view Canada as a world leader in the development of biotechnology statistics. This article notes the future directions and challenges facing the program.

While firms engaged in R&D services are part of the population of firms covered by the Research and Development in Canadian Industry (RDCI) survey and the Biotechnology Use and Development Survey (BUDS), this industry group is not covered by a typical industry survey. This means that there are no industry-specific figures for contribution to GDP or other typical measures of industrial activities and finances. However, data for the industry group are available from the Survey of Innovation 2003, along with other selected professional services. Data from that survey indicate that the establishments in R&D services in physical, engineering and life sciences may be part of a select and highly atypical group of firms and are discussed in this article.

Employment equity legislation is becoming more prevalent in Canadian labour markets, yet -- other than broad availability numbers -- the labour market experiencesof designated groups have not been well documented. Using the National Graduates Survey of 1992, this report profiles the early labour market experiences ofvisible minorities, Aboriginal peoples and persons with disabilities who graduated from Canadian universities and community colleges in 1990. In general, we find thatthe earnings of designated group members are very similar to the earnings of their classmates. However, we also find that members of these groups are more likely tobe unemployed and are less likely to participate in the labour force than others in their class.
