Canadian farmers are actively involved in environmental initiatives and are adopting farming practices that minimize risk to air, water and soil, while contributing to the conservation of biodiversity. The 2001 Farm Environmental Management Survey (FEMS), conducted by Statistics Canada in March 2002, was carried out on behalf of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in order to measure current farm environmental initiatives and farming practices.
The survey collected information from 16,000 farmers on the management of manure, grazing systems, crop nutrients, pesticides, soil and water, as well as whole farm environmental management.
