Three correspondence files are available:
The Dissemination Area correspondence file is a tabular product that describes the relationship between the current census Dissemination Area and the previous census Dissemination Area;
The Dissemination Area and Land Area correspondence file describes the percentage of the current census Dissemination Area's land area within the boundaries extent of the previous census Dissemination Area;
The Dissemination Block correspondence file describes the relationship between the current census Dissemination Block and the previous census Dissemination Block.
Each file contains a unique identifier for the current census geographic area and the corresponding unique identifier for the previous census geographic area. In addition, a relationship flag is included which indicates the degree of correspondence between the geographic areas, facilitating the comparison between census years.

The Dissemination Area Boundary Files portray the dissemination area boundaries for which Census data are disseminated. A dissemination area is a small area composed of one or more neighbouring dissemination blocks and is the smallest standard geographic area for which all census data are disseminated. The files contain the boundaries of all dissemination areas which combine to cover all of Canada.
There are two types of boundary files: digital and cartographic. Digital files depict the full extent of the geographical areas, including the coastal water area. Cartographic files depict the geographical areas using only the major land mass of Canada and its coastal islands. The files provide a framework for mapping and spatial analysis using commercially available geographic information systems or other mapping software.
The Dissemination Area Boundary Files are portrayed in Lambert conformal conic projection and are based on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). A reference guide is available (92-160-GWE).

Up to and including the 1996 Census, the enumeration area (EA) served as both the primary collection area and the basic dissemination area. Optimising both the collection and dissemination functions was a difficult undertaking and compromises were made. For the 2001 Census, the new digital cartographic file called the National Geographic Base (NGB) and the block program have made it possible to create separate enumeration areas for data collection and dissemination areas for data dissemination. This working paper describes the design criteria that have been specified for the implementation of the dissemination area (DA). These criteria address the improvements most frequently requested by users such as increased temporal stability, reduced area suppression, intuitive boundaries, compactness and homogeneity. In addition to integrating and reflecting the recommendations from the user community, the dissemination area design incorporates operational factors related to the DA code structure, maximum code size and production timeframes.
NOTE: This working paper was first released in March 2000 and described the design criteria and their parameters that were being considered for creating the dissemination area (DA) for the 2001 Census. Since that time, the design criteria have been finalised. New information is highlighted as "Updates" in this version of the paper (June 2001). The remainder of the paper is the same as the version released in March 2000.

The set of Dissemination Area Reference Maps by Census Tract covers all 27 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and the 19 census agglomerations (CAs) that are part of the census tract program. Each map in the set covers one census tract (CT) and shows the boundaries and codes of dissemination areas within that CT. The maps also show census tract, census subdivision, and census metropolitan area or census agglomeration boundaries on a background of detailed street networks and other visible features such as rivers, lakes and railroad tracks.There are 6,157 maps in this set - generally one map per census tract. The dimensions of each map are approximately 27 cm by 43 cm (11 inches by 17 inches). Map scales vary according to the size of the census tract; thus the maps cannot be cut and pasted together. In cases where there is too much detail to show on one map, the census tract may be split into two or four maps. Clients are not charged for the extra maps resulting from the CT split. A reference guide is available (Catalogue No. 92F0146GIE).Dissemination area reference maps are also available for smaller urban centres, that is, non-tracted census agglomerations (92F0147XCB, 92F0147XIB, 92F0147XPB), and by census division for areas outside census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations (92F0148XCB, 92F0148XIB, 92F0148XPB). The set of Dissemination Area Reference Maps covers areas outside census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and census agglomerations (CAs). Each map in the set covers one census division (CD) and shows the boundaries and codes of dissemination areas within that CD. The maps also show the boundaries of census subdivisions, census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations, as well as urban areas and representative points for designated places. The maps include background information such as rivers, lakes, railroad tracks and provincial boundaries, and other significant features.There are approximately 600 maps in this set - generally two maps per census division. Some maps include insets to show detail for the congested areas. These insets appear on the main map where possible, but in some cases they appear on a second map sheet.
