Inset maps are available to show detail for the more concentrated areas. The maps also display street network and other visible features such as railroads, rivers and lakes. The Designated Place Boundary Files portray the designated place boundaries for which Census data are disseminated. A designated place is normally a small community or settlement that does not meet the criteria established by Statistics Canada to be a census subdivision (an area with municipal status) or population centre. Designated places are created by provinces and territories, in cooperation with Statistics Canada, to provide data for sub-municipal areas. The files contain the boundaries of all designated places defined for the Census.
There are two types of boundary files: digital and cartographic. Digital files depict the full extent of the geographical areas, including the coastal water area. Cartographic files depict the geographical areas using only the major land mass of Canada and its coastal islands. The files provide a framework for mapping and spatial analysis using commercially available geographic information systems (GIS) or other mapping software.
The Designated Place Boundary Files are in latitude and longitude coordinates and are based on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). A reference guide is available (92-160-G).

The Census Tract Reference Maps, by Census Metropolitan Areas or Census Agglomerations cover all 33 census metropolitan areas and the 15 census agglomerations in the Census Tract Program. The maps show the boundaries and names of census tracts and census subdivisions, designated places and their names, as well as urban core, secondary urban core, urban fringe and rural fringe within the census metropolitan areas or census agglomerations, with one to 10 maps covering each area. There are 131 maps in the series and inset maps were created to show detail for the more concentrated areas.
The maps also display census subdivision boundaries with detailed street network and other visible features such as railroads, rivers and lakes. The maps vary in scale and size; the maximum dimensions are 86 cm by 61 cm (34 inches by 24 inches).

This report highlights the results of the geography portion of the 2001 Census consultation process. At the June 1998 federal-provincial conference session on the 2001 Census, geography was described as the "cornerstone" of the census. Based on the submissions received in the past year, many users feel the same way. It is the standard geographic areas that determine the framework in which the data will be released. It is the users, through the consultation process, who influence the changes to the standard geographic areas that are recommended for each census.
