The scope of this information package will be expanded as subsequent data releases over the next six months or so provide more industry specific details for the seven new pilot industries included in the 1997 UES. Both personal and business travel have seasonal patterns that lead to variations in the demand for hotels, motels and other accommodation services. This article examines seasonal fluctuations experienced by Canada's traveller accommodation industry in 1996. It then focuses on monthly variations in hotel and motel occupancy rates according to such factors as location, establishment size and market orientation. The summary measures yielded by this study also offer useful benchmarks against which individual hotels and motels can compare their own room utilization figures.

A defining feature of rural populations is that they are distant from major metropolitan centres. Thus, households in rural areas have different needs than those in urban areas and, therefore, different spending patterns. In 1996, the total expenditure of an average Canadian household was $49,054. Rural households spent an average of $42,620 while urban households had an average spending of $50,283. This article gives an overview of the differences and similarities in the spending patterns of rural and urban households.

From 1986 until very recently, international tourism experienced a period of rapid growth worldwide. In 1996, for all trips of one or more nights taken anywhere in the world there was sustained growth of 5.6 percent in arrivals and 8.2 percent in international tourism receipts as compared with 1995. These increases represented 595 million out-of-country trips taken around the world and $434 billion US in revenue.

But, it should be recognized that Canada's travel account does not measure the financial health of its tourism industry. The Public-Use Microdata File (PUMF) for the Survey of Household Spending (SHS) provides information on household expenditures as well as selected information on dwelling characteristics and household equipment. The production of this file includes many safeguards to prevent the identification of any one person or household.
PUMFs were produced on an annual basis for SHS 1997 to 2009, before a redesigned survey was introduced with the 2010 reference year. The SHS 2017 PUMF is the first SHS PUMF based on data collected after the 2010 survey redesign.
Due to changes to data collection, processing and estimation methods introduced with the 2010 redesign, users are advised not to compare data from SHS 1997 to 2009 with data from any subsequent years, unless otherwise noted.
