Analysis (742)
Analysis (742) (700 to 710 of 742 results)
- Articles and reports: 63F0002X1996008Description:
Human resources in science and technology are deemed to be important to Canada's economic growth because of the key role they play in the development and use of new technologies. To gain a better understanding of this group and its relation to industry, this paper examines its demographic structure, occupation and education profile as well as its working conditions. The analysis is based on data from the 1991 census of population. It reveals a picture of a well-educated, well-paid, middle-aged (25-44 years) professionals and managers who work full-time all year. The majority are male and have an educational specialization related to their scientific occupation. However, the correspondence between scientific education and occupation is not perfect. There are some who have a certain educational background but who work elsewhere, and there are some who work in scientific occupations without the typical educational profile. The distribution across occupations appears to be changing, with the younger generation moving towards mathematics and systems occupations and away from engineering and the natural and applied sciences. The profile of women differs from that of men in terms of their greater concentration in mathematics and systems occupations. Women in the oldest group have more varied specializations than men.

Release date: 1997-12-31 - 710. Advantages of the One Year Mobility Variable for Breaking Down Interprovincial Migration by Age, Sex and Marital Status ArchivedArticles and reports: 91F0015M1997004Geography: CanadaDescription:
The estimation of the population by age, sex and marital status for each province is a difficult task, principally because of migration. The characteristics of migrants are available only from responses to the census. Until 1991, the census included only the question on place of residence five years ago. Thus, a person who had a different residence five years earlier was considered as a migrant and was attributed the characteristics reported for him/her at the time of the census. However, the respondent had up to five years to change characteristics, particularly those relating to marital status.
Since 1991, the census has asked a question on the place of residence one year ago. The same procedure attributes to the migrant the characteristics reported one year earlier, but this time there is only one year to change them. The article describes, in some detail, the methods now used by Statistics Canada to estimate the characteristics of migrants and evaluates the advantages of using the data on place of residence one year ago.

Release date: 2016-06-21 - Surveys and statistical programs – Documentation: 75F0011XDescription:
This overview for the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID) provides information on the purpose, content, methodology and products and services pertaining to SLID. Its HTML, menu-driven format enables users to discover all main elements of the survey in one, easy-to-use document. This publication was designed for survey respondents, users of SLID data, researchers and analysts, and individuals who would like to learn more about the survey.
The SLID is an important source for income data for Canadian families, households and individuals. Introduced in 1993, SLID provides an added dimension to traditional surveys on labour market activity and income: the changes experienced by individuals and families through time. At the heart of the survey's objectives is the understanding of the economic well-being of Canadians. SLID also provides information on a broad selection of human capital variables, labour force experiences and demographic characteristics such as education, family relationships and household composition. Its breadth of content, combined with a relatively large sample, makes it a unique and valuable dataset.
With this release, users now have free access to the 202 CANSIM Series tables. Tables are accessible using a PC or Mac via the web browser.
