This study provides the first socioeconomic profile of immigrant women board directors and officers in Canada from an intersectional lens. Linking data from the Corporations Returns Act with those from the Longitudinal Immigration database, exploratory estimates are presented. The study analyzes characteristics of immigrants at admission and disparities in family, work and income characteristics, mainly by gender and immigrant status. Further, it informs on the types of businesses in which diverse women executives contribute to corporate governance and strategic decision making.

The paper explores and assesses the approaches used by statistical offices to ensure effective methodological input into their statistical practice. The tension between independence and relevance is a common theme: generally, methodologists have to work closely with the rest of the statistical organisation for their work to be relevant; but they also need to have a degree of independence to question the use of existing methods and to lead the introduction of new ones where needed. And, of course, there is a need for an effective research program which, on the one hand, has a degree of independence needed by any research program, but which, on the other hand, is sufficiently connected so that its work is both motivated by and feeds back into the daily work of the statistical office. The paper explores alternative modalities of organisation; leadership; planning and funding; the role of project teams; career development; external advisory committees; interaction with the academic community; and research.

This article presents findings from a 2001 Canadian pilot survey on the use of knowledge management practices by firms. Of the firms surveyed, 9 out of 10 firms reported using at least 1 of the 23 knowledge management practices that were studied. This survey, a world first by a statistical agency, measured the extent to which knowledge management practices were used by Canadian businesses in forestry and logging; chemical manufacturing; transportation equipment manufacturing; machinery, equipment and supply wholesaler-distributors; and management, scientific and technical consulting services. The reasons for and the results of using knowledge management practices, as well as the practices themselves, are examined by firm size and by type of adopter.

This Pan-Canadian Education Research Agenda (PCERA) 2001 symposium synthesis report was written by Dr. Yvonne Hébert of the University of Calgary. This synthesis report offers a critical review of the research presented at the third PCERA symposium held at Laval University in Québec on May 22 and 23, 2001. The symposium, which was held in conjunction with the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) and the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education (CSSHE) during the annual Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities, explored research and policy issues related to the role of teacher education/educator training, teacher/educator supply and demand, teacher/educator professional development, indicators of success, and leadership.
This report addresses the major policy issues that were discussed at the event and offers recommendations for future research.
