As a term used by OECD Member countries, it is defined as total intramural expenditure on R&D performed on the national territory during a given period. Gross domestic product expenditures on R&D (GERD) for 1999 increased by 3.5% to $14.9 billion over the previous year. Despite this increase, the proportion of GDP devoted to R&D (1.6%) is still among the lowest of the G-7 countries.
