    One of the most important advances brought about by life course and event history studies is the use of parallel or interdependent processes as explaining factors in transition rate models. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a causal approach to the study of interrelated family events. Various types of interdependent processes are described first, followed by two event history perspectives: the 'system' and 'causal' approaches. The authors assert that the causal approach is more appropriate from an analytical point of view as it provides a straightforward solution to simultaneity, cause-effect lags, and temporal shapes of effects. Based on comparative cross-national applications in West and East Germany, Canada, Latvia and the Netherlands, the usefulness of the causal approach is demonstrated by analysing two highly interdependent family processes: entry into marriage (for individuals who are in a consensual union) as the dependent process, and first pregnancy/childbirth as the explaining one. Both statistical and theoretical explanations are explored emphasizing the need for conceptual reasoning.

    Secondary users of health information often assume that administrative data provides a relatively sound basis for making important planning and policy decisions. If errors are evenly or randomly distributed, this assumption may have little impact on these decisions. However, when information sources contain systematic errors, or when systematic errors are introduced during the creation of master files, this assumption can be damaging.

    The most common systematic errors involve underreporting activities for a specific population; inaccurate re-coding of spatial information; and differences in data entry protocols, which have raised questions about the consistency of data submitted by different tracking agencies. The Central East Health Information Partnership (CEHIP) has identified a number of systematic errors in administrative databases and has documented many of these in reports distributed to partner organizations.

    This paper describes how some of these errors were identified and notes the processes that give rise to the loss of data integrity. The conclusion addresses some of the impacts these problems have for health planners, program managers and policy makers.

    The 1996 Canadian Census is adjusted for coverage error as estimated primarily through the Reverse Record Check (RRC). In this paper, we will show how there is a wealth of additional information from the 1996 Reverse Record Check of direct value to population estimation. Beyond its ability to estimate coverage error, it is possible to extend the Reverse Record Check classification results to obtain an alternative estimate of demographic growth - potentially decomposed by component. This added feature of the Reverse Record Check provides promise in the evaluation of estimated census coverage error as well as insight as to possible problems in the estimation of selected components in the population estimates program.

    Statistical agencies often constitute their business panels by Poisson sampling, or by stratified sampling of fixed size and uniform probabilities in each stratum. This stampling corresponds to algorithms which use permanent numbers following a uniform distribution. Since the characteristics of the units change over time, it is necessary to periodically conduct resamplings while endeavouring to conserve the maximum number of units. The solution by Poisson sampling is the simplest and provides the maximum theoretical coverage, but with the disadvantage of a random sample size. On the other hand, in the case of stratified sampling of fixed size, the changes in strata cause difficulties precisely because of these fixed size constraints. An initial difficulty is that the finer the stratification, the more the coverage is decreased. Indeed, this is likely to occur if births constitute separate strata. We show how this effect can be corrected by rendering the numbers equidistant before resampling. The disadvantage, a fairly minor one, is that in each stratum the sampling is no longer a simple random sampling, which makes the estimation of the variance less rigorous. Another difficulty is reconciling the resampling with an eventual rotation of the units in the sample. We present a type of algorithm which extends after resampling the rotation before resampling. It is based on transformations of the random numbers used for the sampling, so as to return to resampling without rotation. These transformations are particularly simple when they involve equidistant numbers, but can also be carried out with the numbers following a uniform distribution.
