- Public use microdata: 95M0027XDescription:
This file provides data on the characteristics of the population.
The 1976 Census Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs) contain samples of anonymous responses to the 1976 Census questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses. Three files are available: the Individuals File, the Families File, and the Households and Housing File.
Microdata files are unique among census products in that they give users access to non-aggregated data. The PUMFs user can group and manipulate these variables to suit data and research requirements. Tabulations excluded from other census products can be created or relationships between variables can be analysed using different statistical tests. PUMFs provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people.
Most of the subject matter covered by the census is included in the microdata files. To ensure the respondents' anonymity, geographic identifiers have been restricted to provinces/territories and large metropolitan areas.
Release date: 2009-03-31 - 92H0011Description:
Through demonstrations, users will learn how to use the geographical products in the context of actual applications. The Postal Codes by Federal Ridings File (PCFRF) provides a link between the six-character postal codes and Canada's federal electoral districts (2003 Representation Order). A federal electoral district (FED) is any place or territorial area entitled to return a Member of Parliament (MP) to serve in the House of Commons and is commonly referred to as a federal riding.
This half-day workshop is intended to help the federal government users of the PCFRF to understand the file and its potential uses. The course describes the elements of the PCFRF, the sources and the creation methodology so that users can ascertain the benefits as well as the limitations of the file. New PCFRF variables, "weight" and "unique link" will be introduced in the course. The "weight" variable can be used to proportionally allocate population-based data where the postal code is linked to more than one FED. The "unique link" variable indicates if the postal code is linked to one or more FEDs.

During this workshop, you will: review methodology and questionnaire content; explore Census Geographies; understand Census concepts and variables; learn how to use Census Program website tools; learn how to find and use Census data on the Statistics Canada website.
Release date: 2005-04-01 - 97C0009Description:
Statistics Canada consultants assist and advise users in developing custom products to best satisfy their data requirements. Custom cross-tabulations are the most flexible and specialized product types. They are developed to meet the exact requirements of individual users in terms of content, geography, format and output medium. This includes the derivation of new variables and the creation of user-defined geographies. Statistics Canada can produce custom place of work products from the following census databases: 1971 (CMA/CA, CSD and CT), 1981 (CMA/CA, CSD and CT), 1991 (CMA/CA, CSD and CT [Ontario only]), 1996 (CMA/CA, CSD, CT, FED and EA) and 2001 (CMA/CA, CSD, CT, FED, DA and block). Confidentiality constraints apply where necessary.
Census dictionaries are available to assist users in identifying the required variables and distributions.
Documentation on historical comparability of concepts is also available in the 2001 Census Dictionary for users interested in making comparisons across census years.
Geographic Level
Custom place of work products are available for any geographic area specified by the user, such as place of residence or place of work. Certain confidentiality constraints apply. The geographic level can be defined in terms of the following:
(a) Standard census geographic area This refers to areas such as enumeration areas (prior to 2001), dissemination areas, census tracts, census subdivisions, census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations, or any combinations thereof. (For example, census tracts can be aggregated to form city-planning districts, or census subdivisions can be aggregated to form market areas.) For 2001 and 1996, postal code geography can also be used for the creation of custom products for place of residence only.
(b) Geocoded areas Data can be retrieved for any area that can be marked on a map and geocoded (based on place of residence or place of work). Custom area creation is the process of creating electronic boundaries (digitizing) based on custom client areas delineated on a map. Possible formats include circles around points or other simple polygons. Examples of applications of custom area creation include city wards that are defined as polygons on a map and marketing target areas defined as circles of a specified diameter around central points.
Custom place of work products can be prepared to the specifications of the user on a variety of output media, including:
- computer printout; - UNIX cartridge; - diskette; - CD-ROM.
A variety of formats are available for compatibility with most mainframe and PC based applications. Output designed for use in a PC environment can be packaged with Statistics Canada's DOS or Windows-based viewing software.

- Articles and reports: 89-657-X2024005Description: The focus of this portrait is the analysis of the sociodemographic, linguistic, ethnocultural, and religious diversity of the Black populations in Canada. Using Census of Population data (1996 to 2021) and data from the 2011 National Household Survey, the paper explores the evolution of the Black populations in Canada and their composition in 2021. An intersectional perspective is used to explore the interactions between multiple diversity measures. By examining the main characteristics of the Black populations born in Canada, the Caribbean and Africa, this analytical portrait demonstrates that there is not one, but many diverse Black populations in Canada.Release date: 2024-10-25

This study uses data from the 2021 Census of Population to examine whether international students and temporary foreign workers face higher rental costs than the Canadian-born population (non-immigrants) and longer-term immigrants (those who were admitted more than five years preceding the census year). It also explores the factors contributing to disparities in rental expenses among these groups.Release date: 2024-10-23
