This Economic Insights article discusses firm entry and exit patterns in the Canadian business sector and its constituent industries. The analysis is based on Statistics Canada Longitudinal Employment Analysis program datasets. The article focuses on the relative importance of entrants and exiters, calculated in terms of number of firms and employment, the persistence of entry and exit patterns over time, and the correlation between industry entry and exit rates.

This article examines various issues related to seniors' access to transportation and to a vehicle. The first part focuses on determining which seniors have a driver's licence and drive a car, including those with the weakest visual, auditory, motor and cognitive faculties. The second part of the article describes seniors' main forms of transportation other than driving a car. The last part examines the impact of seniors' main form of transportation on their level of social participation.

This report presents results of a pilot survey designed to test the use of economic and operational data as inputs into the estimation of the releases of air contaminants from small and medium size enterprises within a given sector of the Canadian economy. As a proof of this concept, data from the Statistic Canada's Survey of Industrial Processes (SIP) was used along with relevant environmental and statistical modeling methods to calculate estimates for gasoline evaporative losses from retail gasoline outlets across Canada.

This study deals with the softwood lumber industry in Canada for the period 2004 to 2010. It analyzes the trend of a number of economic variables, including: sales, production volume, employment, the number of operating sawmills and exports.

This portrait of the French-speaking population in Manitoba contains information drawn from Canadian censuses from 1951 to 2006 and the Survey on the Vitality of Official-Language Minorities (SVOLM) conducted in 2006 by Statistics Canada. Census: The census data contained in this report are drawn from the long census questionnaire, completed by 20% of households and including 61 questions of which 7 are language-related.

The Cancer Survival Statistics tables provide site-specific five-year observed and relative survival estimates for cases diagnosed from 1992 onwards. In addition to age-specific and age-standardized national (excl. Quebec) estimates, all ages (15 to 99 years) and age-standardized provincial estimates are available.

This article examines donating and volunteering among immigrants in Canada: their reasons for doing so or not, the amounts of money and time they give and the types of organizations that they support. It compares immigrants to other Canadians and considers how the philanthropic behaviour of immigrants changes as they establish themselves in Canada. The data are from the 2010 Survey of Giving Volunteering and Participating.

This article examines employer support of volunteering in Canada. It focuses on volunteers who are employed, examining the different types of employer support they receive. It also looks at the number of hours volunteered by supported employees, as well as the type of activities they engage in and work-related skills they acquire through volunteering. Possible effects of employer support are explored, including how it relates to employees' perceptions that volunteering increases their chances of job success.

Based on data from the 2007 to 2009 Canadian Health Measures Survey, this study examines associations between measures of abdominal obesity and cardiovascular risk factors within the body mass index categories for adults aged 18 to 79. The abdominal obesity measures considered are waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio.

This article documents changes in obesity indicators between 1981 and 2007-2009 in Canadians aged 20 to 69 years, based on measured data collected in two population-based health surveys. The primary objective was to examine changes in abdominal obesity within body mass index categories, based on waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio.

This paper examines the process by which migrants experience gains in earnings subsequent to migration and, in particular, the advantage that migrants obtain from moving to large, dynamic metropolitan labour markets, using Toronto as a benchmark. There are two potentially distinct patterns to gains in earnings associated with migration. The first is a step upwards in which workers realize immediate gains in earnings subsequent to migration. The second is accelerated gains in earnings subsequent to migration. Immediate gains are associated with obtaining a position in a more productive firm and/or a better match between worker skills and abilities and job tasks. Accelerated gains in earnings are associated processes that take time, such as learning or job switching as workers and firms seek out better matches. Evaluated here is the expectation that the economies of large metropolitan areas provide workers with an initial productive advantage stemming from a one-time improvement in worker productivity and/or a dynamic that accelerates gains in earnings over time through the potentially entwined processes of learning and matching. A variety of datasets and methodologies, including propensity score matching, are used to evaluate patterns of income gains associated with migration to Toronto.

Participants in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) were asked to indicate how much time they spent studying or doing homework each week in the three PISA subject areas of language arts, mathematics and science. This article looks at the study habits of female and male 15-year-old students in 2009 and how various approaches to the completion of schoolwork are associated with differences in PISA scores.

Macroeconomic data for Canada, including Canada's National Accounts (gross domestic product (GDP), saving and net worth), Balance of International Payments (current and capital account surplus or deficit and International Investment Position) and Government Financial Statistics (government deficit and debt) are based on international standards. These international standards are set on a coordinated basis by international organizations including the United Nations, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and Eurostat, with input from experts around the world. Canada has always played an important role in the development and updating of these standards as they have transformed from the crude guidelines of the early to mid 20th century to the fully articulated standards that exist today.

This Cartographic Boundary File for Canada contains the boundaries of all 82 census agricultural regions delineated for the 2011 Census of Agriculture together with the shoreline around Canada and the larger inland lakes, all integrated in a single layer. The boundary file co-ordinates are latitude/longitude and are based on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). The file is available in ARC/INFO Interchange, MapInfo Interchange and Geography Markup Language formats.A reference guide is also provided.
