This semi-annual publication provides an overview of the Canadian fruit and vegetable production sector. Annual estimates of area, commercial production and value of major tree fruit, berries and grapes are available. Annual estimates of area, production and value of the major commercially grown vegetables are also published. For the mushroom growing industry, estimates of area, production, sales, investments and labour costs and employment are available once yearly.

The first issue for the crop year will appear in June and will present the cultivated areas from the Fruit and Vegetable Area Survey conducted in May. The second will appear in February and include area, production, and value data for the crop year.

This study examines parent- /guardian-reported data about the general health, chronic conditions and physical limitations of First Nations children living off reserve and Métis children younger than age 6. The data are from the 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey.

This study compares estimates of the prevalence of cigarette smoking based on self-report with estimates based on urinary cotinine concentrations. The data are from the 2007 to 2009 Canadian Health Measures Survey, which included self-reported smoking status and the first nationally representative measures of urinary cotinine.

This annual report presents national data on the deaths investigated by Coroners and Medical Examiners (C/ME). These deaths are examined based on their type - natural, accidental, suicide, homicide or undetermined. In addition, the data will be placed in context based on detailed information specific to the circumstances surrounding the death, such as the location of the event leading to death, the activity at the time of the event leading to death, and the use of any safety devices. C/MEs hold data on deaths reported to the offices in their province or territory. The Canadian Coroner and Medical Examiner Database (CCMED) project grew out of recognition that the availability of national level information about the circumstances of deaths that come to the attention of C/MEs will strengthen the ability of the health, justice and other sectors to take measures to protect Canadians from further preventable deaths.

The Dissemination Area Reference Maps, by Census Tract, for Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomerations cover all census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations that are part of the census tract program. Each map in the series covers one census tract and displays the boundaries and unique identifiers of dissemination areas within a census tract. Inset maps are available to show detail for the more concentrated areas. The maps display census tract, census subdivision, and census metropolitan area or census agglomeration boundaries along with street network and other visible features such as railroads, rivers and lakes.

Dissemination area reference maps are also available for non-tracted census agglomerations (92-148-X), and by census subdivisions for areas outside census metropolitan areas and census agglomerations (92-145-X). Together, the three sets of dissemination area maps cover all of Canada.

The Overview of the Census is a reference document covering each phase of the Census of Population and Census of Agriculture. It provides an overview of the 2011 Census from legislation governing the census to content determination, collection, processing, data quality assessment and data dissemination. It also traces the history of the census from the early days of New France to the present.

In addition, the Overview of the Census informs users about the steps taken to protect confidential information, along with steps taken to verify the data and minimize errors. It also provides information on the possible uses of census data and covers the different levels of geography and the range of products and services available.

The Overview of the Census may be useful to both new and experienced users who wish to familiarize themselves with and find specific information about the 2011 Census. The first part covers the Census of Population, while the second is about the Census of Agriculture.

This product presents time series information from various censuses of population. The time series is presented in both graphical and tabular format with the capability to download the information in various delimited formats. The geographic levels presented include Canada, provinces and territories, and census metropolitan areas. All data are according to the 2011 geographic boundaries of these areas and, where permitted, data is presented prior to 1996.

Data are presented according to the major 2011 Census release dates: February 8, 2012 - Population and dwelling counts; May 29, 2012 - Age and sex; September 19, 2012 - Families, households and marital status; Structural type of dwelling and collectives; October 24, 2012 - Language.

These three maps complement the series of thematic maps released with the population and dwelling count analytical products.

This product provides an overview of trends in the heritage institutions industry. It provides users with information required for making corporate decisions, monitoring programs and reviewing policies. The tables focus on financial and operating data.

This product presents statistical tables showing the number of live births and fetal deaths (stillbirths) of at least 20 weeks' gestation or birth weight of 500 grams or more; total and age-specific fertility rates and crude birth rates; live births by age of mother and live birth order; male and female birth weights; weeks of gestation at the time of birth; and multiple births. Numbers are shown for Canada, the ten provinces and the three territories.

The Cancer Survival Statistics tables provide site-specific five-year observed and relative survival estimates for cases diagnosed from 1992 onwards. In addition to age-specific and age-standardized national (excl. Quebec) estimates, all ages (15 to 99 years) and age-standardized provincial estimates are available.

This paper asks how market expansion contributes to productivity growth. It investigates whether entry to both new international markets and new domestic markets is associated with greater productivity growth. It also examines whether exit from export markets is necessarily associated with deteriorating performance or whether it too can lead to success when associated with movements to new markets. Finally, the paper examines the strategy of firms that move to new markets after they withdraw from export markets in order to examine the differences that set them apart from their counterparts that do not find themselves able to adapt because they simply withdraw to their home domestic markets.

This demolinguistic portrait of the French-speaking population in Prince Edward Island was undertaken with the financial support of Canadian Heritage's Official Languages Secretariat, Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) and the Department of Justice Canada. It is the tenth of a series of portraits of official-language minorities in Canada, prepared by Statistics Canada's Language Statistics Section.

This portrait of the French-speaking population in Prince Edward Island contains information drawn from Canadian censuses from 1951 to 2006 and the Survey on the Vitality of Official-Language Minorities (SVOLM) conducted in 2006 by Statistics Canada. Census: The census data contained in this report are drawn from the long census questionnaire, completed by 20% of households and including 61 questions of which 7 are language-related.

Survey on the Vitality of Official-Language Minorities (SVOLM): This is a cross-sectional sample survey. Respondents to the (SVOLM) are selected from the sample of persons who completed the long questionnaire in the 2006 Census.

This Juristat article presents information on violent and household victimization as reported by Canadians aged 55 years and older living in the ten provinces during 2009. It analyses the characteristics associated with such incidents, including the socio-demographic characteristics of victims (e.g. age, marital status), offender characteristics (e.g. number of offenders, sex), reporting incidents to police, consequences of victimization, and perceptions of personal safety and sense of community belonging.

This study examines low income in Canada over a 34-year period from 1976 to 2009 with a multi-line, multi-index approach using data from the Survey of Consumer Finance (1976 to 1995) and Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (1996 to 2009). Three different low income lines are used: the Low Income Cut-offs (LICOs); the Low Income Measure (LIM) and the Market Basket Measure (MBM). In addition, three indexes are used to measure the incidence, depth and severity of low income in the study.

We first examine the evolution of low-income at the national level. This is followed by an investigation of the low income experiences of children, seniors, lone-parents, unattached non-elderly individuals, recent immigrants, off-reserve aboriginals and persons with activity limitations. Next, we compare low incomes across the ten provinces as well as seven Census Metropolitan Areas (CMA). Finally, we study low income mobility in Canada during the 1993-to-2009 period.

This Economic Insights article reports on long-run changes in the value of Canada's external financial assets and liabilities. It summarizes results from the research paper, Canada's International Investment Position: Recent Trends and Implications for Aggregate Measures of Income and Wealth, and is part of an ongoing research program at Statistics Canada that investigates the international dimensions of the Canadian economy.

This paper highlights the large progressive decline in Canada's net financial liabilities to non-residents that has occurred over the last fifteen years. It reports tabulations on changes in Canada's international investment position and the associated cross-border income flows, and evaluates the extent to which these investment income flows have affected the size of Canada's gross national income relative to its gross domestic income. The paper also examines the extent to which changes in Canada's net international investment position have increased the national net worth of Canadians relative to the country's stock of national wealth.

This paper studies the effect of selective attrition on estimates of immigrant earnings growth based on repeated cross-sectional data in Canada. Longitudinal tax data linked to immigrant landing records are used in order to estimate the change in immigrant earnings and the immigrant-Canadian-born earnings gap. The results are compared with those from repeated cross-sectional data. This approach eliminates differences in results that may stem from variation in collection modes and procedures across datasets.

This article investigates the factors associated with voting during the May 2011 federal election. Voting rates are examined across personal, family and labour market characteristics. Multivariate techniques are used to account for many of the characteristics associated with voting. The study is based on several supplemental questions, commissioned by Elections Canada, that were added to the May Labour Force Survey. Voting trends and international comparisons, based on administrative data, are also presented.

This report is based on data from the 2009/2010 Victim Services Survey and provides a profile of victim service agencies in Canada that responded to the survey, as well as information on the clients they served. In reference to 2009/2010, the report presents data on the types of agencies in Canada, the services offered, staff and volunteers, and criminal injuries compensation applications and awards. Characteristics of clients, such as sex, age grouping and type of victimization, are based on counts of clients served on a snapshot day of May 27, 2010. The 2009/2010 Victim Services Survey was conducted by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics and was funded by Justice Canada's Policy Centre for Victim Issues. Victim service agencies surveyed include system-based, police-based and court-based agencies, sexual assault centres, other selected community-based agencies, and criminal injuries compensation and other financial benefit programs for victims of crime. It should be noted that data on transition homes and shelters for abused women and their children are collected through Statistics Canada's Transition Home Survey.

This fact sheet uses information from Education at a Glance 2011: OECD Indicators, a recent OECD report, as a springboard for a description of educational attainment and employment rates in Canada and its provinces and territories. The aim is to develop a better picture by disaggregating overall employment rates across Canada to look at the impact of individuals' tertiary education credentials on employment rates compared with the rates for those with less than high school education.

Macroeconomic data for Canada, including Canada's National Accounts (gross domestic product (GDP), saving and net worth), Balance of International Payments (current and capital account surplus or deficit and International Investment Position) and Government Financial Statistics (government deficit and debt) are based on international standards. These international standards are set on a coordinated basis by international organizations including the United Nations, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and Eurostat, with input from experts around the world. Canada has always played an important role in the development and updating of these standards as they have transformed from the crude guidelines of the early to mid 20th century to the fully articulated standards that exist today.

The purpose of this document is to introduce a new presentation of the quarterly National Accounts (Income and Expenditure Accounts, Financial Flow Accounts and National Balance Sheet Accounts) that will be published with the conversion of the Canadian National Accounts to the latest international standard - System of National Accounts 2008.

This Cartographic Boundary File for Canada contains the boundaries of all 82 census agricultural regions delineated for the 2011 Census of Agriculture together with the shoreline around Canada and the larger inland lakes, all integrated in a single layer. The boundary file co-ordinates are latitude/longitude and are based on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). The file is available in ARC/INFO Interchange, MapInfo Interchange and Geography Markup Language formats.A reference guide is also provided.
