  • Articles and reports: 11F0019M2014353
    Geography: Canada
    Description:

Canada's oil reserves are concentrated in three Canadian provinces: Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Oil prices received by Canadian oil producers more than doubled between 2001 and 2008. The proportion of young men employed in the oil industry differs markedly across provinces and education levels. Taken together, these facts suggest that the increases in world oil prices observed between 2001 and 2008 may have induced cross-educational and cross-provincial variation in labour demand and male wage growth in Canada. Using data from the Canadian Labour Force Survey, this study exploits this variation in wage growth in order to estimate the elasticity of young men's labour market participation and school enrollment with respect to wages.

Description: This paper studies the growth of the Canadian resource economy and the contribution of trading gains arising from increasing terms of trade to real income growth from 1870 to 2010. It combines a historical account of the growth of a succession of natural resources--examining both the production and price history of agriculture, forestry, mining, and oil and gas--with an overview of the impact of these developments on Canadian well-being. It uses estimates of the difference between real income and real output growth, based on measurement theory from the System of National Accounts, to measure trading gains that arose from increasing terms of trade over the period.

    Geography: Canada
Description: Although the location of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is not important as far as their contribution to global warming is concerned, it can be useful to know how final domestic expenditures on products and services in Canada cause emissions in other countries and conversely, how final expenditures elsewhere cause emissions in Canada. This article uses a novel multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model to trace the connections between domestic final expenditures on goods and services in one country and the resulting GHG emissions in another.
