The line and the horizontal bars on the y-axis are located in the middle of the chart and divide the pyramid into two. They indicate age groups from 'less than 30 years' to '75 years and over' in five-year increments.

The horizontal bars on the x-axis represent the number of full-time academics per 1,000 for each age group. The scale goes from 0 to 180. They are identical on both the right and the left sides of the y-axis. For men full-time academics, the largest cohort was those who were aged 55 to 59 years, with 151 academics per 1,000 representing 106 full professors, 40 associate professors and 5 assistant professors (per 1,000). For women full-time academics, the largest cohort was those who were aged 45 to 49 years, with 57 academics per 1,000 representing 13 full professors, 30 associate professors and 14 assistant professors (per 1,000).

The smallest cohorts were for those aged 75 years and over for both genders. For both men and women, there was 1 academic aged 75 years and over per 1,000.

The pyramid has a narrow base, a thick middle section leaning significantly on the left side and an apex slightly less narrow than the base, giving it the shape of a crooked spinning top.
