Infographic description

The title of the infographic is "Plateau in the share of young adults living with their parents from 2016 to 2021"

This is a vertical bar chart.

The vertical axis shows the distribution in percentage from 0% to 60%, by increments of 10%.

The horizontal axis presents the living arrangements of young adults aged 20 to 34 for the years 2001 (light green), 2006 (dark green), 2011 (light blue), 2016 (turquoise), and 2021 (dark blue).

In one section, the share of young adults aged 20 to 34 living with at least one of their parents is displayed.

In the other section, the share of young adults aged 20 to 34 not living with at least one of their parents is displayed. Three corresponding living arrangements are presented within this category: living with their spouse, partner and/or children, living with relatives or non-relatives, and living alone.

In 2001, 30.6% of young adults aged 20 to 34 living in private households in Canada lived with at least one of their parents, 49.1% lived with their spouse, partner and/or children, 11.3% lived with relatives or non-relatives and 9.0% lived alone.

In 2006, 33.1% of young adults aged 20 to 34 living in private households in Canada lived with at least one of their parents, 46.2% lived with their spouse, partner and/or children, 11.3% lived with relatives or non-relatives and 9.4% lived alone.

In 2011, 33.7% of young adults aged 20 to 34 living in private households in Canada lived with at least one of their parents, 43.8% lived with their spouse, partner and/or children, 12.5% lived with relatives or non-relatives and 10.0% lived alone.

In 2016, 35.1% of young adults aged 20 to 34 living in private households in Canada lived with at least one of their parents, 41.9% lived with their spouse, partner and/or children, 12.9% lived with relatives or non-relatives and 10.1% lived alone.

Note(s): In 2021, the definition of young adults living with parents was expanded to include those young adults living in a skip-generation family with at least one grandparent. The analytical and data products of the 2021 Census release also apply this updated concept to the 2011 and 2016 Census years. As a result, there may be small differences in counts for 2011 and 2016 in archived tables.
