For-Hire Trucking (Commodity Origin and Destination) Survey

First and second quarters 2003 (preliminary)

Tonnage carried by Canada-based long-distance for-hire carriers amounted to 148 million metric tonnes of freight in the first two quarters of 2003. This was a 4.3% increase from the 142 million tonnes carried in the same period of 2002.

Although domestic activities accounted for 72% of the total tonnage and 80% of the total shipments, transborder movements generated 47% of the total revenues earned and 52% of the total tonne-kilometres for these carriers.
