Changes or additions from the 2001 questionnaire by topic in the order they appear on the 2006 questionnaire.

Step 1. Operator identification (name, address, phone number) for up to three operators per farm

The first operator is now asked to provide an e-mail address.
The address details (number and road or street name, R.R. No., P.O. Box No.) have been replaced by two lines simply called "address."
The second and third operators need only complete the address if it is different from the first operator's.
All operators are now asked for their date of birth and sex in Step 1 rather than in Step 2.

Step 2. Operator information

The information on date of birth and sex is now requested in Step 1 rather than in Step 2.

Step 3. Farm-related injuries

New step (formerly part of Step 2);
Now a separate step and stipulates injuries requiring medical attention (but not loss of work as in 2001);
Injuries are selected from a list of nine specific injury types (rather than a write-in box as in 2001) and allocated to operators, other family members or another person.

Step 4. Operating arrangements

Formerly Step 3;
No content changes.

Step 5. Organic products

Formerly Step 27;
Now specifies certified, transitional or non-certified organic products and asks for status according to five commodity categories;
Asks for name of certifying agency for certified and transitional products.

Step 6. Unit of measure

Formerly Step 5;
Specifies that the same unit of measure be used throughout the questionnaire unless otherwise specified.

Step 7. Main farm location

Formerly Step 6;
New wording has been simplified and recognizes differing regional designations for location descriptions;
No longer refers generally to "lot, section or part ... starting with the farm headquarters," but asks for the main farm location (farm headquarters) only and not all the additional parcels of land separately.

Step 8. Workable and non-workable land (land tenure)

Formerly part of Step 6;
Asks for distinction between land used by the reporting operation and land used by another operation;
Recognizes evolving land agreements, by asking respondent to include land farmed through trading, rent-free, etc.

Step 9. Hay and field crops

Formerly Step 7;
"Chick peas," "dry white beans" and "other dry beans" are separate question numbers, not three sub-categories under "beans";
"Cranberry beans" have been added as an example under "other dry beans";
"Triticale" has been added as a separate question number.

Step 10. Spring seeding or planting (progress of seeding)

New step (formerly part of Step 7);
Applicable only to crops reported in Step 9.

Step 11. Vegetables

Formerly Step 8;
"Yellow onions" have been added to the question about dry onions, Spanish and cooking onions;
The category "squash, pumpkins and zucchini" has been separated into "squash and zucchini" and "pumpkins";
"Rhubarb" is no longer a separate category, but is given as an example under "other vegetables."

Step 12. Sod, nursery products and Christmas trees

Formerly Steps 9 and 11;
Now asks for sod "under cultivation" (rather than "grown");
"Use of fertilizer or pesticides" is now a criterion for Christmas tree production.

Step 13. Fruits, berries, nuts

Formerly Step 10;
No content changes.

Step 14. Workable and non-workable land (land use)

Formerly Step 12;
Terms "workable and non-workable land" replace "use of land";
"Chemfallow" is included under "summerfallow";
"Woodlands and wetlands" have been added as a separate category;
"All other land" has been expanded to include barnyards, lanes, home gardens, greenhouses and mushroom houses.

Step 15. Weed control on summerfallow land

New step (formerly part of Step 16);
No content changes.

Step 16. Greenhouse products

Formerly Step 13;
No content changes.

Step 17. Mushrooms

Formerly Step 14;
No content changes.

Step 18. Maple tree taps

Formerly Step 15;
No content changes.

Step 19. Herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, commercial fertilizers and lime

New step (formerly part of Step 16);
Instructions specifically exclude greenhouse or mushroom area;
"Lime" is a new category.

Step 20. Land practices and features

New step (formerly part of Step 16);
Six categories have replaced the nine categories in 2001;
"Rotational grazing" has been added to the list of practices, and "buffer zones around water bodies" has been added to land features;
"Permanent grass cover," "contour cultivation," "grassed waterways," "strip-cropping," and "mechanical or hand weeding of crops" have been eliminated.

Step 21. Manure

New step (formerly part of Step 16);
Now asks respondent to indicate whether manure was "applied on this operation," "sold or given to others," "bought or received from others" or "other (composted, dried, processed, stored, etc.)";
Four methods of application ("solid spreader," "irrigation," "liquid spreader – on surface" and "liquid spreader – injected") have been replaced by seven options: "composted manure, incorporated into soil," "composted manure, not incorporated," "solid manure, incorporated into soil," "solid manure, not incorporated," "liquid manure, injected or incorporated into soil," "liquid manure, not incorporated," "liquid manure, applied by irrigation";
Respondents now indicate the land use (field crops, hay and pasture, other) for the each area checked under the methods of application.

Step 22. Land seeded

New step (formerly part of Step 16);
"No-till seeding or zero seeding" now specifies into undisturbed stubble or sod.

Step 23. Irrigation

New step (formerly part of inputs question in Step 16);
Now asks respondent to indicate area of irrigated land by type of crop.

Step 24. Bees

Formerly Step 17;
Now asks for bees used for either honey or pollination;
Respondents are asked to report honeybees in colonies; pollinating bees can be reported in colonies, gallons or by number.

Steps 25 to 27. Poultry

Formerly Steps 18 to 20;
Comprise poultry inventory, chicken or turkey production and commercial hatcheries;
No content changes.

Step 28. Livestock

Formerly Step 21;
Comprises cattle or calves, sheep or lambs, pigs, or other livestock;
The category "market lambs (including wethers)" has been replaced by "lambs";
Leafcutter bees are now part of Step 24 and no longer included under "other livestock."

Step 29. Market value of land and buildings

Formerly Step 22;
No content changes.

Step 30. Farm machinery and equipment

Formerly Step 23;
The three categories for tractors ("under 100 p.t.o. hp. [including garden tractors, ATVs, etc.]," "100-149 p.t.o. hp." and "over 149 p.t.o. hp.") have been changed to four: "under 60 p.t.o. hp. (including garden tractors, ATVs, etc.)," "60-99 p.t.o. hp.," "100-149 p.t.o. hp." and "over 149 p.t.o. hp."

Step 31. Operating expenses

Formerly Step 24;
"Hay" has been added to the "feed and supplements" category;
"Hired trucking" has been added to the "custom work and contract work" category;
"Propane" has been added to the list of examples included under the "All fuel" category;
In the "total farm business operating expenses" line, the reference to the calendar or fiscal years has been deleted, although they remain the reference period as cited in the opening instructions for this step;
The question "Of the amount reported in question 166 above, what was the cost of feed bought from other farmers?" has been replaced by "What percentage of feed, supplements and hay purchases reported in question 179 was purchased from feed mills, feed dealers or other wholesalers and retailers of feed?";

Step 32. Total gross farm receipts

Formerly Step 25;
Now specifies that gross receipts be reported before deducting expenses; previously it asked for "gross receipts, not net income."

Step 33. Paid work

Formerly Step 26;
No content changes.

Step 34. Computer use

Formerly Step 4;
No longer specifies that the computer be used in the management of the farm business;
Now specifies that the type of computer application used be for this agricultural operation;
Two choices have been added to the selection of computer applications: "Desktop publishing (brochures, flyers, etc.)" and "Banking";
The "Internet" category has been clarified with the addition of "(marketing, checking weather or prices, doing research, etc.)."
