Notes

The definition of a census farm changed between 1921 and 2006. These changes affect the comparability of data among censuses. For a summary of these changes, refer to Census terms.

Data for Newfoundland are not included in the Canada figures for the 1921, 1931 and 1941 Censuses of Agriculture since Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949.

For censuses prior to 1996, agricultural operators reported the farm vehicles, machinery and equipment located on their operations on Census Day, regardless of ownership. Since 1996, however, operators have reported all farm vehicles, machinery and equipment that they owned or leased from others. This change affects the comparability with data from previous censuses.

  1. Since 1986, the total number of tractors has included garden tractors. Since 2001, it also included all-terrain vehicles.
