2. Overview

The 2011 Census Population Ecumene Census Division Cartographic Boundary Files represent Canada's population ecumene. Ecumene, a word derived from the Greek root 'oixos' meaning inhabited and 'nenon' meaning space, is a term used by geographers to indicate inhabited land. Statistics Canada applies the definition of the population ecumene as land where people have made their permanent home.

The 2011 Census Population Ecumene Census Division Cartographic Boundary Files are portrayed in latitude and longitude coordinates (North American Datum of 1983 [NAD83]). Figure 2.1 illustrates an example of a Lambert conformal conic projected cartographic boundary file and an unprojected file in latitude and longitude coordinates.
