Immigration

Estimates are based on the immigrant files provided by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) according to information made available on August 20, 2012.

Emigration

The estimates are produced by Demography Division using:

  1. data from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Canada Child Tax Benefit files (CCTB). For 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, we used 2009/2010 data;
  2. tax data provided by the Income Statistics Division of Statistics Canada. For 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, we used 2009/2010 data;
  3. data provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Office of Immigration Statistics. For 2011/2012, we used 2010/2011 data;
  4. since CRA revised its identification procedure of returning emigrant children, we revised the emigrants in order to have a coherent series for the 2006/2007 to 2011/2012 period based on the 2012 data version. This revision also includes minor modifications made to the emigrant children by the CRA.

Returning emigration

The estimates are produced by Demography Division using:

  1. data from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Canada Child Tax Benefit files (CCTB). For 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, we used 2009/2010 data;
  2. 2006 Census – 1 year mobility;
  3. CRA modified its identification procedures of returning emigrants children. In order to have a coherent series in the postcensal period, we revised the data from July 2006 based on data obtained in the 2012 version.

Net temporary emigration

The estimates are produced by Demography Division using:

  1. data from the Reverse Record Check (RRC) of the 2006 Census;
  2. 2006 Census – 1 year mobility;
  3. estimates of returning emigration for 2001/2006 intercensal period;
  4. since CRA revised its identification procedure of returning emigrant children, we revised this estimate for the 2001 to 2006 period. These (unreleased) data allowed us to estimate new net temporary emigration for the postcensal period and gave us a coherent series for the 2006/2007 to 2011/20102 period based on data from the 2012 version.

Non-permanent residents

The estimates are produced by Demography Division using Field Operational Support System files (FOSS) from CIC. These files, received on August 20, 2012, document the number of persons holding permits/authorizations or claiming refugee status.

Interprovincial migration

The estimates are produced by Demography Division using:

  1. CCTB-based adjusted migration data for children;
  2. factors corresponding to the ratio of the migration rate of all children to the migration rate of eligible children calculated using 2010/2011 tax file data;
  3. factors used to calculate adult migration and corresponding to the ratio of the adult to child migration rates, calculated on a three-year basis using tax file data for 2008/2009, 2009/2010 and 2010/2011;
  4. children interprovincial migration data from July 2011 to March 2012 were revised for the following reasons:
  1. Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) recently modified its definition of eligible children for the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB). This change had an impact on the children origin-destination matrix which is the base of the total interprovincial migration method;
  2. following discussions with CRA, it was decided to use a new source of data to adjust for the partial coverage of the CCTB. This report is part of the series of files received monthly and has the advantage of being created at the same time and by the same team as the children origin-destination matrix, offering a better coherence;
  1. these modifications had a minor impact :
  1. the change in classification reduces the number of in and out migrants but has little impact on the monthly net migration;
  2. the change of data source for CCTB coverage adjustment has very little impact on the estimates;
  3. the combination of the 2 changes slightly reduces the number of in and out migrants but has little impact on the monthly net migration;
  1. following a modification in the age and sex distribution model, the interprovincial migration estimates where revised from 2006/2007. This modification does not affect the total estimate of this component.
