  1. On January 1, 2009, Canada’s population was estimated at 33,504,700, up 0.19% compared to October 1, 2008. This increase is greater than what was observed last year at the same period.
  2. The increased rate of population growth in the country is due to higher net international migration which, over the last three months of 2008, was the highest since 1988 for a fourth quarter.
  3. Due in part to increased international migration, all provinces and territories except the Northwest Territories and Prince Edward Island posted growth in their population in the fourth quarter of 2008.
  4. Population growth has been stronger in Western Canada. The four provinces west of Ontario all posted greater growth than the country.
  5. Because of a rise in its gains from interprovincial migration and the sustained influx of international migration, Alberta was the province with the highest population growth.
