In both men and women, the proportion of people who can be considered to be heavy drinkers (five or more drinks at least once a month in the last year) decreases with age. Among men, this proportion was 32% in the 25 to 54 age group. However, it fell to around 20% in men aged 55 to 64 years, to 12% in those 65 to 74 years of age and to 5% of men 75 years of age and up. In all age groups, the proportion of men who were heavy drinkers in the last year was higher than the corresponding proportion of women.
