These tables provide information on the production and performance of book publishers operating in Canada.  Every year data are released on the number of companies, total revenue and expenses, salaries, wages and benefits and the profit margin.  In addition, every two years, but not this survey year, data are produced on the number of titles published, reprinted and in print by type of book; the number of units sold by type of book; net sales, sales in Canada, exports and other foreign sales; grants received; number of employees and salaries; and international transactions. Data are available by province or region.

Data for 2005 should not be compared with data released previously on this industry with the exception of 2004 data.  This is because significant changes to the book publishing survey were made prior to the 2004 survey year.

These changes include:

  • The data are collected using a sample and represent 95% of total revenue earned by the book publishing industry;
  • The survey frame is based on a central Statistics Canada database of businesses that have been classified through the use of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS);
  • Self publishers, vanity publishers and print-on-demand publishers were not previously considered as book publishers but are now included in the survey; and
  • Exclusive agents who earn at least 10% of their revenue from book publishing will be considered in scope for the survey; pure exclusive agents are excluded.
