| 1. | Health regions are defined by the provincial ministries of health. These are legislated administrative areas in all provinces. The health regions presented in this table are based on boundaries and names in effect as of June 2005. | ||
| 2. | A "peer group" is a grouping of health regions that have similar social and economic characteristics. The nine peer groups are identified by the letters A through I, which are appended to the health region 4-digit code. The areas that are excluded from the Labour Force Survey affect estimates for Peer Groups F and H. Just over 40% of the population of Peer Group F is excluded, while less than 10% of Peer Group H is excluded. As a result, estimates for Peer Group F are not available. | ||
| 3. | In Nova Scotia, District Health Authorities (DHA) are administrative units defined by the provincial ministry of health. Zones are aggregations of the nine district health authorities. | ||
| 4. | In Ontario, Public Health Units (PHU) administer health promotion and disease prevention programs. District Health Councils (DHC), which were advisory, health planning organizations, were dissolved as of March 31, 2005. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced the creation of Local Health Integration Networks (LHIN) on April 1, 2005. LHINs are responsible for planning, funding and administering health care programs and services across the province. | ||
| 5. | In Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, health regions are referred to as Health Authorities (HA) or Regional Health Authorities (RHA). | ||
| 6. | The unemployment rate is the number of unemployed persons expressed as a percentage of the labour force. The unemployment rate for a particular group (age, sex, marital status or others) is the number of unemployed in that group expressed as a percentage of the labour force for that group. | ||
| 7. | The labour force consists of people who are currently employed and people who are unemployed but were available to work in the reference week and had looked for work in the past 4 weeks. Reference week refers to a one-week period (from Sunday to Saturday) that usually includes the 15th day of the month. The Labour Force Survey excludes residents of Indian Reserves, the Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, inmates of institutions and full-time members of the Armed Forces. Labour Force Survey exclusions account for less than 2% of the population aged 15 and over. | ||
