Les taux de mortalité sont normalisés selon l'âge par la méthode directe en prenant pour référence la structure par âge de la population qui prévalait lors du Recensement de la population du Canada de 1991. Tous les taux sont des taux pour 100 000 habitants. L'utilisation d'estimations démographiques correspondant à une population type permet de calculer des taux de mortalité dont la comparaison est plus significative, car les taux ainsi obtenus sont corrigés pour la variation de la structure par âge de la population au fil du temps ainsi que d'une région à l'autre.
4. Les régions socio-sanitaires sont définies par les gouvernements provinciaux comme étant les secteurs de responsabilité des conseils régionaux de santé (établis aux termes de la loi), ou encore comme des régions intéressant les autorités sanitaires.
5. Les taux que contient le présent tableau sont fondés sur les données sur la mortalité recueillies pour trois années (par exemple, de 1995 à 1997). Ces données ont été totalisées et le résultat divisé par l'estimation de la population de l'année du milieu. La période de référence associée à ces données reflète le point milieu de la période de trois années (par exemple, 1996).
6. Les intervalles de confiance associés aux taux normalisés selon l'âge ont été calculés selon la méthode de Spiegelman dont voici la référence : M. Spiegelman, « Introduction to Demography », Revised Edition, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard University Press, 1968, page 113, formule 4.29.
7. L'intervalle de confiance (IC) de 95 % témoigne du degré de variabilité d'un taux. La variabilité des taux présentés est d'autant plus forte que l'intervalle de confiance est grand; aussi faut-il interpréter et comparer ces taux avec prudence.
8. Certains taux normalisés selon l'âge n'ont pas été divulgués (- -) en raison du très petit nombre d'observations et de l'extrême variabilité qu'on leur associe.
9. À l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, les deux régions socio-sanitaires divisent la province selon une entité « rurale » et une entité « urbaine ». La province a délimité des régions socio-sanitaires pour les seuls besoins statistiques.
10. En Nouvelle-Écosse, les régions sont appelées des « zones » et correspondent aux limites administratives des régions socio-sanitaires de la province.
11. En Ontario, les unités de santé publique gèrent les programmes de promotion de la santé et de prévention de la maladie, tandis que les conseils régionaux de santé sont des organismes consultatifs de planification en matière de santé.
12. Compte tenu de la faible population de la région socio-sanitaire de Churchill (région 4690) au Manitoba (1 110 habitants en 1996), les données de l'état civil relatives à la région socio-sanitaire numéro 4680 (Burntwood) sont présentées sous forme d'un agrégat des régions de Burntwood et Churchill.
13. En Saskatchewan, des « zones de services » ont été créées en regroupant les 33 districts de santé.
