Description for Figure 1

This is a table of four quartiles of greenness within urban Canada, measured using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index. The table includes a description of the greenness quartile and a line drawing of street view within each quartile of greenness.

In the lowest quartile (top row), the descriptive text reads “few trees, few parks, heavily built-up or newly developed lands.” The line drawing is of a street in a city centre, with a large paved surface, tall buildings, and only a few small street trees.

In the mid-lowest quartile (second row from the top), the descriptive text reads “sparse tree growth, small grassy areas and parks.” The line drawing is of a wide paved residential street with lawns and a mixture of a few mid-sized trees that do not form a closed canopy or cover the street.

In the mid-highest quartile (third row from the top), the descriptive text reads “larger trees, large grassy areas or parks.” The line drawing is of a narrower paved residential street with lawns and larger trees that form a closed canopy around the houses in some areas.

In the highest quartile (fourth row from the top), the descriptive text reads “mature trees forming canopy, close proximity or adjacent to forested areas or greenbelt.” The line drawing is of a narrow paved street, with dense, mature tree canopy. One side of the street is a forest, and the other has a single house that is surrounded by dense trees.
