Figure A Study sample and exclusion criteria

Description for Figure A

The diagram summarizes how the analytical study sample was created starting from the original data source and applying various exclusion criteria to arrive at the final study sample. A series of boxes and arrows are used to illustrate this process.

The box at the top of the diagram indicates that the Canadian Community Health Survey-Health Aging 2008/2009 has 30,856 respondents. The next box (below) indicates that when restricted to respondents who agreed to link and share their data, the sample size drops to 25, 316.

Subsequent boxes indicate that 462 respondents who completed the survey by proxy, 2 respondents for whom dates were inaccurate, and 11,815 who were between the ages of 45 and 64 were excluded bringing the sample size down to 13,037.

At this point the diagram has separate boxes summarizing the sample size for men (bottom left) and for women (bottom right). The number who died or did not die are presented. This is determined by whether or not the respondent had a link to the Canadian Vital Statistics Database (CVSD) mortality data up to December 31, 2017.

There were 5,408 men in the study sample; 2,175 who died and 3,233 who did not die during the follow-up period.

There were 7,629 women in the study sample; 2,778 who died and 4,851 who did not die during the follow-up period.
