.. not available for a specific reference period ... not applicable p preliminary 1.OECD guidelines request that R&D in the entire postsecondary sector be reported; however, data for Canada are limited to R&D activities in universities and affiliated institutions, as data on R&D in colleges and similar institutions are not being collected as part of the current data program at Statistics Canada. The "higher education" sector was labelled "university" in previous editions of Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Program (PCEIP). Higher education covers postsecondary educational institutions and affiliated teaching and research facilities. This change is part of an initiative to facilitate international comparisons. 2. The private non-profit (PNP) sector appears in the performing sector for the gross domestic expenditures on research and development (GERD) for Canada. Beginning with reference year 2000, the data for the private non-profit sector performing research and development are not distributed by provinces or territories. The national totals of research and development by performing sector include the PNP sector. 3. Includes the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. 4. As of 2007, Quebec and Ontario figures include federal government expenditures on research and development performed in the National Capital Region. 5. Government category includes other classes. Private non-profit category included elsewhere. 6. National estimate or projection. 7. Government category - national estimate or projection. 8. Government category includes federal or central government only. Government, business enterprise, university and private non-profit categories exclude most or all capital expenditures. 9. Busines enterprise category - Secretariat estimate or projection based on national sources. In 2007, for the private non-profit, there is a break in the series with the previous years for which data are available. 10. Prior to 2007, social sciences and humanities were excluded from the R&D data, which creates a break in the series with the previous years for which data are available. 11.OECD Secretariat estimate or projection based on national sources.
