0s value rounded to 0 (zero) where there is a meaningful distinction between true zero and the value that was rounded
1. Expenditures on private business colleges are not included.
2. Nunavut was created on April 1, 1999. Prior to that date, data for Nunavut were included with data for the Northwest Territories. This creates a break in series for the Northwest Territories in 1999/2000. The only college in Nunavut did not report tuition fees (which are part of private expenditure) for trade vocational training before 2000/2001.
Notes: Large year-over-year variations in public and private funding to school boards are caused by accounting adjustments to prior-year surpluses and/or deficits. This means that trends should be observed over a period of years rather than from one year to the next.
Amounts for private expenditure on education are estimated based on private direct sources of funds. At the postsecondary level these include student fees and other sources of funds (including bequests, donations and non-government grants, investment income, auxiliary enterprises (gross), borrowings and miscellaneous interfund transfers).
To convert this current dollar data to constant dollar amounts for comparison over time, it is recommended that the Gross domestic product (GDP) implicit price index be used for national and provincial-level conversions. For the index and further details on converting see Table F.1.2 (Statistics Canada and Council of Ministers of Education, Canada. December 2009. Education indicators in Canada: Report of the Pan-Canadian Education Indicators Program. Catalogue no. 81-582-XIE. Ottawa.). Previous versions of this table were converted to constant dollars using the Consumer Price Index.
