1. OECD guidelines request that R&D in the entire postsecondary sector be reported; however, data for Canada are limited to R&D activities in universities and affiliated institutions, as data on R&D in colleges and similar institutions are not being collected as part of the current data program at Statistics Canada.
2. Expenditures on R&D by the private non-profit sector are no longer distributed provincially as of 2002.
3. Quebec and Ontario figures exclude federal government expenditures allocated in the National Capital Region. Canada includes federal government expenditures contributed in the National Capital Region.
4. Data not available by individual territory.
5. Government category includes other classes. Private non-profit included elsewhere.
6. Government category includes federal or central government only. Government, business enterprise, university and private non-profit categories exclude most or all capital expenditures.
