Chart: Volunteer rate, by age, Canada, 2004

Mandatory community service was most prevalent among volunteers aged 15 to 24 years (13%). Among those required to volunteer, 69% of 15 to 19 year-olds and 61% of 20 to 24 year-olds reported that volunteering was required by their school. Youth aged 15 to 19 tended to volunteer with different types of organizations than other volunteers (for example, education and research, and social services organizations) and engaged in different types of volunteer activities (for example, coaching, refereeing or officiating, and fundraising). Their motivations also differed from others – they were more likely, for example, to volunteer to improve their job opportunities, to explore their own strengths and because their friends volunteer.
