chpza25 -- Reductions of benefits as per NCBI, positive amount

  • Type and length: Numeric(8)
  • Description: Represents the reduction to social assistance and/or child benefits applied by certain provinces as a result of the National Child Benefit Initiative expressed as a positive amount. This variable is the result of calculations rather than reported amounts, and is for policy evaluation purposes only. The same reductions to social assistance and/or child benefits that this variable represents are already assumed in the relevant variables in SLID. A reversal of the reduction would mean that this amount is added to the family's income. Two simplifications are necessary: 1) The reduction is calculated on an annual rather than monthly basis, so it does not take into account cases where social assistance was received for only part of the year (this is the same as assuming that the social assistance amount, as well as the child benefit amount, was received in equal parts over all 12 months of the year) 2) The reduction cannot be calculated (assumed zero) if the family's social assistance amount was in fact reduced to zero (in which case we can't identify it), or the family received an amount but the survey failed to capture it. Where relevant for the calculation, the number of children equals the number of children at the end of the year, unless that is zero but was positive in at least one month of the year, in which case a value of 1 is used instead. The reduction is calculated after assigning all social assistance amounts reported for the two spouses of a family to the same spouse to whom child benefit amounts are assigned in SLID; this is the female spouse, or otherwise the elder of two spouses. Most values are derived using other variables. For further information, contact survey staff.

cmaca25 -- CMA/CA residence for the household, December 31, refyear

  • Type and length: Character(3)
  • Description: Census Metropolitan Area or Census Agglomeration (CMA/CA) of residence for the household as of December 31 of the reference year. For more information on codes 996 to 999, please refer to variable SACTYP. Reference years prior to 1999 follow the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Reference years from 1999 to 2004 follow the 2001 Census geography-base boundaries, and reference years from 2005 and on follow the 2006 Census geography-base boundaries. The categories for this variable changed to incorporate the changes that occurred between the 1991, 2001 and 2006 Censuses. The categories take into account the boundary adjustments, renaming of areas, creation of areas and retirement of areas between the censuses. Codes for retired areas and areas with boundary adjustments are only applicable for reference years prior to 1999 for the 1991 Census or between 1999 and 2004 for the 2001 Census. Codes for areas created in the 2001 Census are applicable only for reference years 1999 and on; codes for areas created in the 2006 Census are applicable only for reference years 2005 and on. Codes for areas that have been renamed after the 1991 or 2001 Census are applicable in all reference years. The applicable years are indicated in brackets beside each category. Starting with the 2006 Census, CAs are no longer required to have a main population centre population count of 100,000 to be promoted to the status of a census metropolitan area. Instead, census agglomerations assume the status of a census metropolitan area if they have attained a total population of at least 100,000 of which 50,000 or more live in the main population centre. As a result, six CAs from the previous census became CMAs. For further details, please refer to the Census dictionary: http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/english/census06/reference/dictionary/geotoc.cfm

Please refer to variable YEIR for data with respect to the 1991 and 2001 Census geography-base boundaries for reference years 1992 and on. The categories for this variable changed to incorporate the changes that occurred between the 1991 and 2001 Censuses. The categories take into account the boundary adjustments, renaming of areas, creation of areas and retirement of areas between the censuses. Codes for retired areas and areas with boundary adjustments are only applicable for reference years prior to 1999. Codes for areas created after the 1991 Census are applicable only for reference years 1999 and on. Codes for areas that have been renamed after the 1991 Census are applicable in all reference years. The applicable years are indicated in brackets beside each category. The code set for EIR change by adding new EIR codes so the code set is common for both census geographies. The reference years indicated in brackets implies that the corresponding code is applicable only to those reference years. For the 1991 geography, the July 1996 delineation of EIR is used and for the 2001 geography, the July 2000 delineation of EIR is used. These regions are used for the administration of the employment insurance program from Human Resources Development Canada starting in July 1996. However, these codes have been added to the SLID database back to 1992.

To reduce the length of the category descriptions, the following terms are used: UNATTACHED INDIVIDUAL: While the definition of household does not include persons who do not live with a relative, such persons (called unattached individuals) are assigned a household id. If desired, data users can use this variable to separate unattached individuals from households. ELDERLY: The major income earner in the household is aged 65 or over. Spouse: The partner living with the major income earner in the household, including married, common-law and same-sex relationships. MARRIED COUPLE: The major income earner and his/her spouse. RELATIVE: A person related to the major income earner by blood, marriage, adoption or common-law. CHILDREN: The household includes at least one child (birth, adopted, step, or foster) of the major income earner under age 18. Other relatives may also be in the household. Children of guardians are not considered "children" in this classification. In other words, older relatives are not treated as de facto parents when there is no direct parent identified. LONE-PARENT FAMILY: Includes at least one child as defined above. Households where the parent is 65 years or older are excluded. OTHER RELATIVE: A person in the household who is not the major income earner nor his/her spouse or child under age 18. Children aged 18 or over are considered to be "other relatives".

sactyp25 -- Statistical Area Classification type of residence, refyear

  • Type and length: Character(2)
  • Description: Statistical Area Classification type of residence for the household as of December 31 of the reference year (available for 2001 and 2006 Census Geographies only). A census metropolitan area (CMA) or a census agglomeration (CA) is formed by one or more adjacent municipalities centred on a large population centre (known as the main population centre). Starting with the 2006 Census, CAs are no longer required to have a population centre population count of 100,000 to be promoted to the status of a CMA. Instead, CAs assume the status of a CMA if they have attained a total population of at least 100,000 of which 50,000 or more live in the main population centre. As a result, six CAs from the previous census became CMAs. To be included in the CMA or CA, other adjacent municipalities must have a high degree of integration with the main population centre, as measured by commuting flows derived from census place of work data. If the population of the main population centre of a CA declines below 10,000, the CA is retired. However, once an area becomes a CMA, it is retained as a CMA even if its total population declines below 100,000 or the population of its main population centre falls below 50,000. The population centres in the CMA or CA that are not contiguous to the main population centre are called secondary population centres. Rural areas in the CMA or CA are called the rural fringe. When a CA has a main population centre of at least 50,000, it is subdivided into census tracts. Census tracts are maintained for the CA even if the population of the main population centre subsequently falls below 50,000. All CMAs are subdivided into census tracts. The CMA and CA influenced zone (MIZ) is a new concept applied to areas outside CMAs and CAs. Census subdivisions (CSDs) outside CMAs and CAs are assigned to one of four categories according to the degree of influence (strong, moderate, weak or no influence) that CMAs and/or CAs collectively have on them. The strong MIZ category includes CSDs with a commuting flow of 30% or more (at least 30% of the total employed labour force living in the CSD works in any CMA/CA main population centre). The moderate MIZ category includes CSDs with a commuting flow percentage between 5% and under 30% (at least 5%, but less than 30%, of the total employed labour force living in the municipality works in any CMA/CA main population centre). The weak MIZ category includes CSDs with a commuting flow percentage more than 0%, but less than 5% (more than 0%, but less than 5% of the total employed labour force living in the municipality works in any CMA/CA main population centre). The no MIZ category includes those CSDs with fewer than 40 people in the resident labour force commuting to work in CMA/CA main population centre. Note: SACTYP is only available from reference year 1999 and on since this classification was introduced in the 2001 Census. SACTYP replaced CATYP, which was previously used to group CMA and CA types.

A household is flagged to reside in a rural area if the population centre code from the GAF is '0000'. For reference years 1999 on, a household is flagged to reside in a population centre if the first 2 digits of the population centre code from the GAF or the Postal Code Conversion File (PCCF) are not '99'. A household is flagged to reside in a rural area if the first 2 digits of the population centre code from the GAF or PCCF are '99'. The population centre codes are determined by Geography Division of Statistics Canada. In the 1991 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area as an area with a population of at least 1,000 and a population density of at least 400 per square kilometre as predetermined by the 1986 Census. In the 2001 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area in the same way, but as recorded by the current census population counts. urbsz25 -- Population size of population centre - Population of area of residence

  • Type and length: Character(2)
  • Description: Population size of population centre. Population of area of residence. Notes: Reference years prior to 1999 follow the 1991 Census geography-base boundaries. Reference years from 1999 to 2004 follow the 2001 Census geography-base boundaries and reference years 2005 and on follow the 2006 Census geography-base boundaries. In the 1991 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area as an area with a population of at least 1,000 and a population density of at least 400 per square kilometre predetermined by the 1986 Census. However, the population centre population size groups are assigned based on their 1991 Census population counts. In areas where population declined, this can result in some population centres having a population of less than 1,000 according to the 1991 Census. Hence, in the 1991 Census geography-base, there was a population centre population size group for "0 to 999". In the 2001 Census, Statistics Canada defined an urban area in the same way, but as recorded by the current census population count. As well, the population centre population size groups are assigned based on their 2001 Census population counts. In the 2006 Census, Statistics Canada defined a population centre in the same way, but as recorded by the current census population count. As well, the population centre population size groups are assigned based on their 2006 Census population counts. Hence, in the 2001 and 2006 Census geography-base, there is no inconsistency between the population centre definition and population counts. Consequently, in SLID there is no population centre area with a population count for the group "0 to 999" starting in reference year 1999 on. Hence, the categories for this variable are the same and the applicable years are indicated in brackets beside each category.

  • Type and length: Character(1)
  • Description: Adjusted size of area of residence is assigned according to the variable CMAPO (CMA/CA population).
