Perspectives on Labour and Income

News from The Daily

Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada
Two years after they arrived in Canada, prime working-age immigrants had made significant progress integrating into the labour force, but they still faced some challenges.

Labour Force Survey
Employment was unchanged in September, but the unemployment rate remained among the lowest in almost three decades, edging down 0.1 percentage points to 6.7%.

Employment Insurance
The number of Canadians receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits in July fell by an estimated 5.9% from June. All provinces showed a decline.

Employer pension plans
The value of the retirement savings of millions of Canadian workers with trusteed pension plans increased once again in the first quarter-the eighth consecutive quarterly gain.

Trends and conditions in census metropolitan areas
While the low-income rate in metropolitan areas did not change significantly between 1981 and 2001, low income was not shared equally among demographic groups. Recent immigrants (those who immigrated in the last decade), Aboriginal people, and people in lone parent families had much higher low-income rates than others.
