Additional information
The monthly Building Permits Survey collects data on the value of building permits issued by Canadian municipalities for both residential and non-residential buildings, and the number of residential dwellings authorized. The survey also measures the number of dwelling units demolished.
Building permits dashboard allows users to examine data for a specific month as well as a period of time. Users have options to select seasonally or non-seasonally adjusted data to be visualized. This tool compares month-to-month changes of building permits statistics by different geographic areas and building types. Interactive views such as a map of Canada, bar charts, a data table and a cross report chart are available.
This visualization tool contains only a portion of the data under building permits program. The sum of seasonally adjusted data may not add up to the total due to rounding. Additional information is available at table 34-10-0285-01 as well as in Housing Statistics.
How to use
How to use this application
Building permit estimates can be visualized in two ways: monthly analysis and longitudinal analysis. Click on the buttons at the top to switch between them. Within these, you can further refine the data by selecting:
- Seasonally adjusted or unadjusted data
- A specific reference month or period
- A specific province, territory or central metropolitan area
- A type of construction permit (i.e., residential vs non-residential)
Explanation of data visualizations under 'Monthly analysis':
- The “Value of permits” area presents monthly value ($) and monthly changes (%) for selected components. Blue arrow represents an increase, while red arrow represents a decrease
- The “Number of units” area presents monthly counts of residential units created and monthly changes (%) for selected components. Blue arrow represents an increase, while red arrow represents a decrease
- On the map, the colours identify monthly value changes. Positive movements are represented by shades of blue and negative movements are represented by shades of red. The darker the shade, the stronger the movement. No change is represented by the colour white
- To use the zoom function in the map view, click on the map and use your mouse to scroll in or out
- The bar chart displays “Month-to-month change ($ millions)” and “Month-to-month change (%)” for the variables you have selected
Explanation of data visualizations under 'Longitudinal analysis':
- “Monthly value” displays the line for selected components
- “Monthly percentage change” displays the percentage changes for selected components
- “Combined analysis” displays both the value and percentage changes for selected components
Helpful Hints
The “Show data” button at the bottom of the screen displays the underlying data table for selected components.
To export data, highlight the table and click on “more options” (…) at the top right corner of the table.
It is possible to select more than one geography or construction permit type at the same time by holding down the "Ctrl" key while clicking on another items in the same list.
