Notes
This interactive tool displays select data from the Agriculture and Agri-Food Economic Account (AAEA). The AAEA enhances the industrial detail for the agricultural and agri-food manufacturing sector within the Supply and Use tables.
This enhanced detail provides a new perspective of the farming and agricultural processing industries.
The information contained in this data visualization product collapses industry data from the Supply and Use Tables that are not in the immediate scope of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Economic Account (AAEA).
The Agriculture and agri-food economic accounts are built around three classification systems, namely the Input-Output Industry Classification (IOIC), the Input-Output Final Demand Classification (IOFDC), and the Supply and Use Product Classification (SUPC). Each classification has four levels of hierarchy, consisting of the Detail level, Link-1997 level, Link-1961 level and Summary level. These classifications are available upon request.
Additional information related to the Supply and Use Tables is available at the following link:

The table below summarizes which supply and use table industries are included in the AAEA and their respective expanded industry name (if applicable). Certain supply and use table industries without industry expansion are still included in the AAEA due to their presence and importance to the agriculture and agri-food sector. These industries maintain the same supply and use table industry name in the AAEA.

Definitions
Definitions
- Supply and use table industry
- Industry associated with the official supply and use tables (see publication 36-10-0478)
- Agriculture and agri-food industry
- Newly disaggregated industry presented in the AAEA
- Production
- The value of all goods and services produced by an industry. Also known as “output”.
- Intermediate consumption
- The value of all goods and services used by an industry in the process of production of other goods and services.
- Gross value-added
- Calculated as production minus intermediate consumption.
- Gross value-added ratio
- Calculated as industry gross-value added divided by industry production.
- Margins and taxes
- The difference in valuation between the final cost of a product (purchaser price) and the valuation at the factory/farm (basic price). Margins are applied for transportation, retailing and wholesaling.
How to use
How to use this application
The visualization tool has four main panels for exploring the data: the upper left panel, which contains the map; the upper right panel, which displays various industry-specific details; the bottom left panel, which shows value added for the core supply and use table (SUT) industries; and the bottom right panel, which shows the disaggregated industry detail available in the Agriculture and Agri-Food Economic Account (AAEA).
Recommended approach for navigating the tool
It is recommended that users explore the data by working counter-clockwise:
- Upper left panel: Select a reference year and a geography.
- Bottom left panel: Select a core SUT industry for which you would like to see additional details (e.g., crop production).
- Bottom right panel: Hold the Ctrl key and select an AAEA sub-industry for which you would like to see industry-specific information (e.g., wheat farming).
- Upper right panel: View the results based on your selections.
Upper left panel
Users can select a reference year or geography from the dropdown menus. These selections can be changed at any time to manipulate the data in the visualization.
Hovering your cursor over a province or territory on the map of Canada will show the value added associated with the AAEA industries for that province or territory. Note that this information will not change based on selections in the other panels of the visualization.
Bottom left panel
This panel displays the total value added for all of the core SUT industries detailed in the AAEA. No additional information is displayed in this panel. The set of industries displayed does not change. However, the order in which the industries are displayed changes to show descending order of importance, based on year and geography.
Users can select a particular industry of interest by clicking it. This will change the data in the bottom right panel only.
Bottom right panel
This panel displays the total value added for the AAEA sub-industries associated with the selection made in the bottom left panel.
If no industry is selected in the bottom left panel, the default view shows all AAEA industries.
Users can hold the Ctrl key and click one of the sub-industries to adjust the data in the upper right panel. Note that, if you do not hold the Ctrl key, the view will change to show your selection in the context of all AAEA industries. In either case, your selection modifies the data shown in the upper right panel.
Users can do a combined selection (to see aggregated data for multiple industries) by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking multiple bars or industry names.
Upper right panel
This panel displays detailed industry metrics based on the selections made in the other panels. The middle of the visualization shows the core macroeconomic data associated with a given selection: output (production), intermediate consumption and value added.
On the far right, the main products (with their corresponding SUPC code in square brackets) of the industries selected are shown, along with the top five goods and services used in the production process.
Hovering over any of the products listed will display the complete supply and use articulation for the product.
General notes
Hovering over any graphical element will generate a pop-up that contains the full industry name and the underlying data.
Users can access the data from a visual element, with the exception of the hover-over elements, by right-clicking the element and selecting “Show data.”
