Guide to the Labour Force Survey
Appendix C: Information on the Labour Force Survey questionnaire

The Labour Force Survey (LFS) application consists of several questionnaire components (Household, Demographics, Labour Force Information (LFI), Rent and Exit). Each of the questionnaire components is comprised of a number of question blocks and each question is identified by their block ID and electronic questionnaire question number. In some instances, question numbers are repeated within components (e.g. there are three separate questions in the household, demographics and the LFI component labelled as EQ 1).

Question wording within the collection application is controlled dynamically based on responses provided throughout the survey. For simplicity, as a result of the complexity of the logic within the application, not all variations of these questions are presented.

Selected dwellings are in the survey for six consecutive months. A birth interview corresponds to the first interview for a new household and is usually conducted in person.

Subsequent interviews are conducted in the following months and are usually done by telephone. Starting in 2015, LFS respondents who met certain criteria were also offered the option of completing the survey on-line for subsequent interviews.

Starting in fall 2024, some dwellings may be invited to complete a brief initial survey to confirm contact information, before completing the main LFS questionnaire for six months.
