In September 2001, the freight loaded by railways in Canada (excluding intermodal traffic) totalled 19.7 million metric tonnes. This represented a decrease of 5.4% compared to September 2000. The intermodal tonnage, represented by "container-on-flat-cars" (C.O.F.C.) and "trailer-on-flat-cars" (T.O.F.C.) decreased by 0.1% compared to the same period in 2000, to reach 1.9 million metric tonnes. The five main loaded commodities were: coal (3.4 million metric tonnes), iron ores and concentrates (2.7 million metric tonnes), wheat (1.5 million metric tonnes), potash (1.1 million metric tonnes) and lumber (0.9 million metric tonnes). The cumulative freight loaded (excluding intermodal traffic) for the first eight months of 2001 reached 179.0 million metric tonnes.
