Highlights

  • In February 2001, the freight loaded by railways in Canada (excluding intermodal traffic) totalled 18.9 million metric tonnes. This represented a decrease of 9.5% compared to February 2000.

  • The intermodal tonnage, represented by "container-on-flat-cars" (C.O.F.C.) and "trailer-on-flat-cars" (T.O.F.C.) decreased by 2.9% compared to the same period in 2000, to reach 1.7 million metric tonnes.

  • The five main loaded commodities were: coal (3.1 million metric tonnes), iron ores and concentrates (2.3 million metric tonnes), wheat (1.6 million metric tonnes), potash (1.1 million metric tonnes) and lumber (0.9 million metric tonnes).

  • The cumulative freight loaded (excluding intermodal traffic) for the first two months of 2001 reached 39.6 million metric tonnes.
