Aircraft Movement Statistics February 2004(Preliminary)Airports with NAV CANADA Air Traffic Control TowersThe data in this bulletin represent preliminary monthly statistics for airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers. In February, the 42 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 340,458 take-offs and landings, an increase of 8.1% compared to February 2003 (314,836). This marks the first increase in year-over-year comparisons of monthly movements since March 2003. The increase partly reflects an extra day of activity due to the 2004 leap year. In spite of the extra day, thirteen airports showed year-over-year decreases in aircraft movements for February 2004 compared to February 2003. Two airports showed decreases greater than 20% this month compared to 17 airports in January. Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased by 7.0% (up 15,098 movements) in February 2004 compared to February 2003. This represents the first year-over-year percentage increase since December 2003 (1.2%). Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) rose by 10.7% (up 10,524 movements) in February 2004 marking the first increase since March 2003. The top ten airports in terms of volumes of itinerant movements in February showed year-over-year increases ranging from 21.8% (1,473 movements) at Victoria Intl to 0.1% (7 movements) at Winnipeg Intl. The top ten airports in terms of local movements showed year-over-year variations ranging from 54.9% (1,798 movements) at Toronto/Buttonville Municipal to -7.2% (-662 movements) at Boundary Bay. Nine of the top ten airports recorded increases in local movements compared to two airports in January 2004. More detailed statistics for airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations will be released in the Aircraft Movement Statistics monthly report (TP141 - Volume 1). Statistics for airports without air traffic control towers will appear in TP 141 - Volume 2. Upon release, the TP141 reports are available (free) on-line at http://www.tc.gc.ca/pol/en/Report/tp141e/tp141.htm For further information concerning this bulletin, please contact Aviation Statistics Centre, Statistics Canada (1-866-500-8400).
