Preliminary Aircraft Movement Statistics

Airports with NAV CANADA Air Traffic Control Towers

The data in this bulletin represent preliminary monthly statistics for airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers. Historical issues of this bulletin are available on-line at
http://www.tc.gc.ca/pol/en/Report/TP1496/tp1496.htm

In January 2003, the 43 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 307,261 total movements, a decrease of 5% compared to January 2002 (322,265). Monthly year-over-year comparisons show the rate of the decline is slowing. In November, the decline was recorded at -6% compared to -5% for December and January. The number of aircraft movements recorded at these airports in January 2003 was still16% below the figure recorded in January 2001 (367,114).

Overall, the decrease in January 2003 was due to a 14% drop (14,620 movements) in the local movement versus the itinerant movements which dropped by less than one percent (384 movements). One third of the towered airports showed increases in total aircraft movements for January 2003 compared to a year earlier. Of the 28 airports showing year-over-year decreases, eleven airports had decreases of -20% or more.

Among the top ten airports in terms of volumes of itinerant movements in January, LB Pearson and Dorval recorded the largest gains in volume of itinerant movements, both gaining more than a thousand movements. Edmonton City Centre reported the largest decline in volume, down 738 itinerant movements.

Among the top ten airports in terms of local movements, Abbotsford and Boundary Bay recorded the largest gains, rising 1,813 and 650 local movements, respectively. Waterloo Regional and Edmonton/Villeneuve recorded the largest declines, dropping 1,835 and 1,715 local movements, respectively.

More detailed statistics for airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations will be released in the Aircraft Movement Statistics monthly report (TP141 - Volume 1). Statistics for airports without air traffic control towers will appear in TP 141 - Volume 2. Upon release, the TP141 reports are available (free) on-line at http://www.tc.gc.ca/pol/en/Report/tp141e/tp141.htm
