Following four years of increases, the number of aircraft take-offs and landings at Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and/or flight service stations decreased by 5.0% in 2009. Ninety-three airports reported almost 5.9 million movements in 2009 compared with 6.2 million movements at 95 airports in 2008.

In December 2008, the flight service stations at Kuujjuarapik, Quebec and St Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador were closed. As a result, the data are displayed in this publication in the section pertaining to the airport’s tower category for the period while under that category. The 2009 data for these airports will be found in the Aircraft Movement Statistics: Airports Without Air Traffic Control Towers: Annual Report (TP 577), 51-210.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased 4.2% (-180,943 movements) in 2009 compared with 2008.

Local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) declined 7.1% (-132,219 movements) in 2009 compared with 2008.

In 2008 the air traffic control towers at Sudbury, Ontario and Montreal/Mirabel International, Quebec closed in June and December respectively and reopened as flight service stations. Meanwhile, the flight service station at Fort McMurray, Alberta closed effective October 2008 and reopened with an air traffic control tower.

Airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers

The 41 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers reported 4.68 million aircraft take-offs and landings in 2009, down 5.2% compared with 2008 (4.93 million movements). Year-to-year decreases in aircraft movements were reported by 29 of these airports in 2009. The variations ranged from an increase of 20.2% at Moncton/Greater Moncton International, New Brunswick to a decline of 39.6% at Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Itinerant movements decreased 3.6% (-121,695 movements) in 2009. Twenty-nine airports recorded decreases in itinerant movements in 2009. The year-to-year variations ranged from an increase of 31.9% at Pitt Meadows, British Columbia to a decline of 27.4% at Gander International, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Local movements dropped by 134,011 movements (-8.8%) in 2009. Twenty-six airports recorded decreases in 2009. The year-to-year variations ranged from an increase of 30.8% at Regina International, Saskatchewan to a decline of 61.5% at Vancouver Harbour, British Columbia.

Airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations

The 52 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA flight service stations reported 1.22 million aircraft take-offs and landings in 2009, down 4.5% (-57,456 movements). Year-to-year decreases in aircraft movements were reported by 33 of these airports in 2009. The variations ranged from an increase of 74.1% at Sudbury, Ontario to decline of 25.4% at Port Hardy, British Columbia.

The number of itinerant movements dropped by 6.3% (-59,248 movements) in 2009 compared with the previous year. Year-to-year variations in itinerant movements ranged from a 71.5% increase (+12,347 movements) at Sudbury, Ontario to a decline of 24.7% (-3,014 movements) at Port Hardy, British Columbia.

The number of local movements recorded in 2009 increased by 0.5% (+1,792 movements) compared with a year earlier. Year-to-year variations in local movements ranged from a 112.2% increase (+1,769 movements) at Cranbrook, British Columbia to a decline of 53.2% (-1,099 movements) at Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador.
