There were 443,614 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in October 2012 compared with 489,355 movements in October 2011. Year-over-year decreases were reported by 57 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (36,193 movements) and Vancouver International, British Columbia (24,451 movements) were the most active sites in October.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) decreased (-24,506 movements) in October 2012 from the same month in 2011. These airports reported 323,029 movements compared with 347,535 movements in October 2011. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 752 movements (+6.7%) at Edmonton International, Alberta to a drop of 2,094 movements (-36.2%) at Toronto/Buttonville Municipal, Ontario. Sixty airports reported year-over-year decreases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in October 2012.

In October 2012, there were 120,585 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents a decrease of 15.0% (-21,235 movements) compared with the previous year. Montréal/St-Hubert, Quebec (7,546 movements) and Boundary Bay, British Columbia (6,822 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 270,980 domestic itinerant movements reported by 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in October 2012, down 8.5% (-25,085 movements) from October 2011. Vancouver International, British Columbia (18,505 movements) and Calgary International, Alberta (16,177 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements. Sixty-one airports reported year-over-year decreases in the number of domestic movements in October 2012.

Eighty-two airports recorded 42,896 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in October 2012, up 1.9% from the same month in 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (15,931 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.

In October 2012, forty airports reported 9,153 other international itinerant movements, down 2.4% from October 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 4,364 other international itinerant movements. This represents 47.7% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
