There were 571,002 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in July 2012 compared with 564,180 movements in July 2011. Year-over-year increases were reported by 44 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (38,894 movements) and Vancouver International, British Columbia (29,226 movements) were the most active sites in July.
Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 1.7% (+6,841 movements) in July 2012 from the same month in 2011. These airports reported 413,351 movements compared with 406,510 movements in July 2011. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 2,429 movements (+40.6%) at Fort McMurray, Alberta to a drop of 1,492 movements (-28.0%) at Moncton/Greater Moncton International, New Brunswick. Forty-nine airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in July 2012.
There were 157,651 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) in July 2012 compared with 157,670 movements in July 2011. Boundary Bay, British Columbia (11,788 movements) and Toronto/Buttonville Municipal, Ontario (9,890 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.
Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international
There were 355,388 domestic itinerant movements reported by 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in July 2012, up 1.7% (+6,010 movements) from July 2011. Vancouver International, British Columbia (22,105 movements) and Calgary International, Alberta (17,220 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements. Fifty airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of domestic movements in July 2012.
Eighty-seven airports recorded 46,495 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in July 2012, up 1.9% from the same month in 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (16,189 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.
In July 2012, thirty-eight airports reported 11,468 other international itinerant movements, down 0.3% from July 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 5,419 other international itinerant movements. This represents 47.3% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
