There were 538,272 aircraft take-offs and landings at the 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in May 2012 compared with 511,184 movements in May 2011. Year-over-year increases were reported by 54 airports. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (36,978 movements) and Vancouver International, British Columbia (25,915 movements) were the most active sites in May 2012.

Itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another) increased 5.3% (+19,039 movements) in May 2012 from the same month the previous year. These airports reported 378,331 movements compared with 359,292 movements in May 2011. Year-over-year variations ranged from an increase of 2,144 movements (+39.5%) at Toronto/Buttonville Municipal, Ontario to a drop of 901 movements (-36.6%) at Brandon Municipal, Manitoba. Fifty-eight airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of itinerant aircraft movements in May 2012.

In May 2012, there were 159,941 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport) recorded. This represents an increase of 5.3% (+8,049 movements) compared with the previous year. Toronto/Buttonville Municipal, Ontario (9,978 movements) and Montréal/St-Hubert, Quebec (9,648 movements) recorded the largest number of local movements.

Itinerant movements: domestic, transborder and international

There were 324,853 domestic itinerant movements reported by 93 Canadian airports with NAV CANADA air traffic control towers and flight service stations in May 2012, up 5.8% (+17,945 movements) from May 2011. Vancouver International, British Columbia (19,566 movements) and Calgary International, Alberta (16,545 movements) reported the greatest number of domestic itinerant movements. Fifty-eight airports reported year-over-year increases in the number of domestic movements in May 2012.

Eighty-two airports recorded 43,352 transborder itinerant movements (between Canada and the United States) in May 2012, up 2.7% from May 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario (15,739 movements) reported the greatest number of transborder itinerant movements.

In May 2012, forty-four airports reported 10,126 other international itinerant movements, down 0.3% from May 2011. Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International, Ontario, recorded 4,781 other international itinerant movements. This represents 47.2% of the total other international itinerant movements reported.
